Yes! Yes! What is the current speculation on the new lenses being released? But rumor... that Nikon is going to combine the D3h and D3X lines into one D3 camera system.

Thom does NOT believe that the D3h and D3x will merge, rather that we'll get the D3h (crop sensor) now and the D3x mid next year. My greatest joy will realized if the D3x turns out to be 35mm size (24x36mm) for low noise and better WA performance. That is if and only if the new sensor can 'see' the same at the edges as it does in the middle.

Only time can tell...

So, who is Thom Hogan? Is he a pretty reputable source of information? I like what I read but I really don't know enough about him to give him any more credence over a lot of other Internet bloggers.

Did you read Thom's bio?

He also 'writes the book' on Nikon equipment. Don't tell me you don't own his D70 or D200 e-books? They have loads of nuggets and IMHO are worth every penny.

Nikon Press Conference - Aug 23rd - 08-22-2007, 08:43 AM

Bjorn Rorslett :
I'm already arrived in Tokyo and as promised by Nikon it's sure hot here. Tomorrow's Press Conference will be attended by around 350 journalists and photographers.

We'll see what happens..

I read Thom's comments as saying we'll get a FF D3h now with moderate resolution (say, 10-12mp) and extreme ISO's to compete with the 1DMk3.

Then next year we'll get the FF D3x with high resolution (20mp or so) to compete with the 1DsMk3.

If noise is your primary concern and 12mp or so is enough for your portraits, you might better off with the D3H unless you really need the extra megapixels (assuming I'm reading Thom's comments right and the D3H will be FF).

I don't think FF has inherently better WA performance. In fact I'm welling to bet my D2x + 12-24 is every bit as good at the edges as a FF DSLR + 17-35 would be. The latter combo has a one-stop advantage which may be important to some, but if the rumors about a new 14-24 or 14-28 f/2.8 lens are true, such a lens would also be useful on a DX body.

It looks like we should find out late tonight though, hopefully we won't have to speculate much longer.

Actually what I like is the same frame/DOF/perspective given by the larger media. I don't really want/need more pixels. There's just something about that size that 'feels' right to me. Of course the more film I shoot, the more that is reinforced.

And I just might be interested in the D3H if it's FF and >=10.2MP.

Haha - great thread. TJ you just couldn't resist could you. TJ and I have played w/ the 5D and Canon 24 F1.4 and 50 f1.4 and the results are pretty cool.

Jeff - I may be one of the only fools on here who owned a Kodak ProSLRn - so I've used a cropped camera (Fuji S2) with the 12-24DX and I've used the Kodak ProSLRn with the 17-35AFS. I also used it w/ the 16mm fisheye (10.5 wasn't available then).

I can tell you that in my experience, the shots from the FF system were just 'better' for some reason. I can't pin it down, but the 17-35 is just a joy to use as it was meant to be used.

I interpreted Thom's comments in about the same way as Jeff - the "sports" camera is coming first, then the studio camera. BUT BEFORE all that, there is a mid-range D200 type camera.

Cheers
James
