150,000 actuations, then what? - 09-21-2007, 02:01 PM

I was reading that the Nikon D3 was rated for 150 thousand actuations. In the back of my mind I think it's similar for the D200 and the D2's.

I wondered if someone with experience could tell me what's next?

I presume it's repairable upon failure. Any idea on cost? Surely it's not trash at that point.

I'm realizing 150,000 is not that many! <gulp>

The shutter on my D2H was replaced for about $350, if I remember correctly.

Excellent... (Peace of mind) I was sure it had to be repairable. I just needed to hear it. Thanks, Tom.

whats to say it wont fail well before that??? it could last well beyond that as well. its a mechanical device and it can fail at any time, just like your car.

Sent it to Nikon for shutter assembly replacement or buy a new Nikon....you know that's what you really want to do!

I would be surprise it was not more than 150,000. That is the same as the Canon 40D. 1DMKIII is 300,000.

In any event it doesn't matter if it squats at 50,000 and it is out of warranty.

Yeah, there's no magic number after which the shutter drops dead. That figure is simply a MTBF rating for the shutter. Whenever the shutter fails, if it ever does, you just send it in for repair and get a whole new shutter mechanism.

Assuming it's a legally imported official USA Nikon. Nikon USA won't touch anything else.

Excellent news; no failure here, yet. I was just surprised by that number when I was contemplating the new Nikons and yes, would enjoy having.

I presumed it could be fixed just had never heard the details. $400 bucks is a sight better than an $1800 dollar replacement. I hope I misread and it is 300,000 or more. I just came to realize that the actuation number goes up pretty quickly.

So far, it would take me 15 years to "use up" 150,000 actuations.

The D3 is tested for 300,000 and the D300 is 150,000

If you complaint, you'll get a free replacement for a premature shutter ka-pow. I did, my out of warranty m2n get full services for free on top of the failed shutter... it choked at 52k.

According to the "Pro" with tons of proud films experience, it will take them hundred years to reach 150k. Amateur like me won't lasts 3-4 years or the shutter came lose... which ever come first.

Well I used to think I didn't drink very much till I found all the bottle caps I tossed into a drawer. I thought, "My gosh, I could'nt have had this many" but the caps don't lie and they definately add up fast. I didn't even have a burst setting on the fridge...

By the way, I think I was drinking Coca-cola...

...or was I?

My D2H shutter exploded (quite literally) at 348,961.

I sent it off on Monday (next day air), I had it back on Saturday.

It cost me $58.50 for Saturday UPS delivery.
