Canon Fall Rebates (U.S. Version)? - 10-06-2007, 06:19 PM

Hi all,
I've seen rumors of the Fall rebate program (usually happens in mid-October). The Canadian program has been announced, and the 5D is definitely on that list. I'm curious if anyone has heard anything a little more definitive about this same program, but in the U.S.

I would LOVE to add a 5D to my arsenal before heading to Uganda in January.

I would think it very likely that the 5D will be on the rebate.

I keep hearing October 15 or 16, such as from here or here. My debate is whether to hold out for a 5D replacement which is predicted for January, or go for the much less expensive (with rebates) current 5D. I think, given my stage in life, the 5D would comfortably fit my needs. If the 5D replacement comes out in January, however, the rebate program would overlap with it's arrival on the market. The rebate program surely would not include the 5D replacement, but it would make the decision a whole lot easier.

Current 5D + 24-70L at double rebate:
5D at B&H: $2500 (rebate $350)
24-70L at B&H: $1250 (rebate $100)
Total: $3750
Total minus double rebates: $2850

I'm thinking the 5D replacement everybody thinks will appear in Jan will come out at $3000. So, $3000 + $1250 with a puny $100 rebate on the lens = $4150. That's a diff of $1300 for a few more megapixels and *maybe* better noise. Pretty much a no-brainer for me, since I'm not a fashion photog, or making murals or billboards.

I'm curious if anyone here has done a shoot with the 5D, and kicked themselves later for not having more megapixels or better noise performance. Most peeps here are selling to folks who burn their flash on their Elph P&S from row 120 at the night game and can't figure out why their pics turn out dark and blurry. Am I right? Ok, not everyone. I'm just sayin.

Thanks, Rott (by the way, great Avatar. My parents gave away my rottie, Allie, when I went away to college :( )

From what I've heard, the 5D (Mk I or Original) may be the better camera to have, anyway. From some speculation I've heard about the 5D Mk II or 6D, whatever it may be, the current 5D sensor is supposed to be the one to have.

We'll see how it works out. Just 10 days or so until the announcement SHOULD be made...

Rott, I am in the exact same position as you, even down to the lens choice. I just sold off all of my EF-S gear (17-55/10-22/60mm) in anticipation of getting a 5D with the new rebates. I keep thinking the 5D MKII would be a significant upgrade and I should hold out for it, but I'm almost sure that it will show up at $3000+ which is clearly out of my price range. Therefore, I'm gonna stay focused on the 5D. I'm hoping the double rebates give at least $400-500 off the 5D.

This should be in Equipment talk not Buy and Sell......

Can a mod move it?

You're probably right, John. I just figured, since it had a lot to do with whether I would BUY a 5D and SELL my EF-S lenses, it might fit here! ;)

I have no problem with it moving, if someone can sort that out...
