30D Problems - 10-22-2007, 11:59 AM

I need help from fellow Canon DSLR (specifically 30D) users.

During my last photo shoot, I’ve noticed all of my shots were extremely blurry and white as if I had my ISO set at 1600 during a bright sunny day.

When I noticed the problem, I immediately checked my settings. The settings were:

AV mode
ISO at 400 (semi cloudy but, some sun light thru the trees)
Aperture at 11
I was using my Canon 70-200 F4 lens.
Auto white balance
I swapped glass to Canon 17-55mm F2.8 and still had the same problem.

So, I didn’t know if the problem was the body or the glasses so, I changed to my 2nd body. (Rebel XTi) No problem from either glass when I used the XTi.

So, last night I checked to see if I can duplicate the problem on the 30D, but it seemed to work fine this time. HOWEVER, a new problem arose. When the glass was set for AF, it won’t AF but it’ll AF when set to MF.

What is wrong with my 30D?

I would try the following...just based off of other threads similiar to yours:

1. Pencil eraser on the contacts on the lenses. Visually check and clean if necessary the contacts on the body side. Check again.
2. If 1. fails, then remove battery and wait a few moments. Check again.
3. If 2. fails, then reset the camera memory, remove battery and wait a few moments. Check again.
4. If 3. fials, then do number 3. again, but also remove the button battery. Check again.
5. If all of the above fail, then take it to a shop or send to Canon.

I will post sample pics tonight.

I do have a Canon OEM grip.

I did detach the grip from the body. I also cleaned the lens contact area with a blower. I reset all the presets to OEM specs.

In despite of these, I’m still having the problem with AF issue.

I have not updated any firmware since I purchased it brand new from Adorama about 8 months ago.

Given your continuing problem; I believe your best bet is sending it in to Canon with a complete description of the issues you are having. The sooner, the better if you want it back for the holidays.

I havent had any issue with the 2 30D's I have. If the cleaning and battery reset doesnt work it sounds like it will need to be sent to Canon.

1. I don't think anyone asked about your grip, but since you have, remove it to minimize and reduce the error.

2. Cleaning the lens contact area with a blower won't cut it...use pencil head eraser and gently scrub the contacts with the eraser (like normal erasing). Just be sure to hold the lens as an angle such that the eraser "dingle berries" fall away from the center of the lens. Doing this to the camera side contacts needs to be done more carefully since these contacts are pins. I ususally just use my micro fiber cloth on them.

3. So you only reset the camera using the menu to OEM default settings? Did you remove both the main battery and the button batters (memory battery...looks like a large watch battery)?

2. I'll try cleaning the contact area with the pencil head eraser.

3. Yes, I only reset the camera using the menu to OEM default settings...I didn't know there was a main battery/button battery for memory. I'll have to find it and remove that and see if that will fix the problem.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

UPDATE

I removed all batteries, disconnected the grip, I cleaned the glass contact areas (body and the glasses) and Voila! It's back to normal. :)

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I have always preached that it is my belief that 95% of problems encountered with Canon EOS cameras are power related. Somehow the power grid has been interrupted, or the power getting to the processor is not up to specifications for some reason. I.E. changing the battery and cleaning the contacts solves most problems.
