D2h Metering Issues - 10-24-2007, 11:37 AM

Good morning gang!,
I am having a problem with my D2H metering shots very under exposed in the "S" and 'P"modes. I can set thing manually, by the old up 1 down 1 method and keeping a close eye on the histogram, but its a hassle as you can Imagen. Has anyone had this problem before? And did you solve it yourself or did the camera have to go to the repair bench.

Thanks for any and all input.

This was a known issue with the D2h. There is nothing that you can do to fix it. You must return the camera to Melville NY to have it repaired. There was an Nikon bulletin out on this, a couple of years ago and they repaired the camera free of charge. I sent my camera in and they returned it within two weeks....

Hope this helps...

What he said. The meter in my D2H was replaced under warrantee, but after that, you'd need to pay.

Assuming you have a US model, they'll fix it, but given the cost on repairing old technology, it may be worth it to consider upgrading. With the D3 coming out soon, The D2X prices are falling, and having had both, I can assure you it's worth the money if you can swing it. You're probably looking at $350-$450 minimum, but they can tell you for sure.

Thanks for the input! The camera was a gift from my brother-in-law and I am not sure if is US or not. Can you tell by the serial#?

Usually, but not always, US starts with 2. So says Nikon, but I've never seen gear without it.

The only time it's not, is if it was a shipment originally meant for sale overseas, and was sent back to Nikon by the dealer. They could in theory resell in in the US.

I bought one of my D2H's with a bad metering sensor, out of warrantee. Nikon repaired that and an exploded shutter (the reason I sent it in - I pretty much shoot on manual so the metering sensor didn't really bother me), along with a lot of other little things, for just under $15 shipping, and took about ten days total to do it.

In other words - the metering sensor is a known issue and Nikon will take care of it (based on my experience). At least they did for me, a little over a year ago.
