Ebay purchase, D50... - 11-07-2007, 05:06 PM

So I wanted a D50 for my wife because she wanted to use older lenses. I know they don't sell them new any more so I turned to ebay. I didn't realize until after the auction that you could still buy them refurbished.

Anyways, the camera looked good on the auction and the description sounded good. He said the camera and lens were in good shape. The only thing he pointed out was there was a tear on the paper surrounding the outer diameter of the lens(18-70). My other lenses don't have this and I'm assuming it's just to hide what's underneath it. Anyways, I wasn't really concerned about it.

So I get the camera and start looking at it. The lens has 1 decent scratch on it and 2 other pretty visible nicks. Also, when you move the lens around in the light you can see other numerous tiny scratches. Also, the barrel is kinda dirty behind where the filter goes. When I took the lens off, the glass on the back looked like my dog slobbered on it. It was that nasty. It cleaned up fine and I can't see anything visibly wrong.

The camera has taken 5050 pictures. The shutter sounds much different then my D200, but I'm assuming it should. Other than that the mirror is pretty dirty.

So I paid $385 shipped. It came with a lowepro bag, and a 1 gig sd card.

I contacted him with my concerns on the lens and he said I can either ship it back to him or he'll refund me $100. $285 seems like a pretty good deal, but then again I don't want a paperweight in 5 months.

Sorry this is getting so long...

So I can get a refurbished D50 for $399 and a refurbished 18-55 for ~$70.

Would ya'll take the refund and keep the camera? Or send it back and by the refurb stuff.

Any techniques on checking if the scratches will effect picture quality?

Thanks - Doug

I don't know what a good price is for a used D50, but maybe one option is to accept his $100 refund offer... let your wife use it to see if she likes it... and if so, sell it on ebay to try and recoup the $285 and then buy the refurbed version.

Sound Advise. Let her use it, sell it, and upgrd it later when she is ready.

My bet is he wouldn't be willing to send you the $100 unless he hopes you don't send it back. He probably knows more than you do. Do as others say use it for a short while and sell it. Ill bet you can find something like maybe a D40 at a good price. If you are like me if I am unhappy with something it bugs me till I change it.

I quit doing ebay at least a year ago. No regrets.

Yeah, this is the final straw...

I ended up keeping it and I'm waiting on the $100.

I don't want a D40 and neither does she because it can't use no DX lenses.

Oh well, hopefully it turns out good.
