A free alternative to Adobe CS - GIMP - 07-18-2005, 10:50 AM

I have a few programmer friends.. and I am a computer nerd. *wears the tag proudly* The buzz is that this program is every bit as good as Adobe, with the only exception being some layering options and its not quite as user friendly.

Still.. at the price of "free" -- and offered for LINUX, MACOSX, and Windows.. it might be worth a try for some of you.

Yes, its really called "gimp" - no, I'm not sending you guys to some silly website. :)

Enjoy!

While I'm a supporter of free software, anyone who tells you that GIMP is as good as Photoshop, doesn't really use Photoshop.

Right now off the top of my head here are the limitations:

No support for 16 bit resolution
Limited RAW capabilities (a few plug-ins are available)
Limited plug-in availability (none of the really good ones)
Automation support non existant (actions, batch, etc.)

That kills it for me. I have it installed on my Linux desktop, but the most I use it for is quick edits or resizing if I leave the Powerbook at home.

YMMV

GIMP doesn't color manage either does it?

I would consider GIMP to be much more inline with Paint Shop Pro than Adobe CS.

I've never used GIMP, so I can't bash it properly. :P

i think any tool that helps someone get the results they want is a "great tool"

especially if someone cant afford PSCS etc i think using GIMP is a great alternative...

Gimp is nice, but it is'nt Photoshop.

Another low cost alternative is Bibblepro. It has 80% to 90% of the tools that you need and is low cost. It has batch processing, work flows, color corrections, WB etc. It does not have the "pixel editing" capability of PS or GIMP.

Overall I'm very happy with it. It also runs on Windows, Linux/Unix and Mac.
