I am a Nikon girl so I bought the Nikon 50c and I don't like it. Probably going to sell it on eBay. I really want something that has halfway decent shots. I know I'm not going to get the same caliber as my DSLR but I want something to have in my purse and the 50c did NOT cut it.
Thanks!

Closest thing I found to dslr quality in a P&S is my Ricoh GX-100.
Search this forum and you'll find some examples i posted.
The GX-100 is not all that small so you may want to look at some other Ricoh cameras, too.
The only downside for me, and it's not enough to really bother me is that is has higher noise levels at higher iso's than some other cameras. Shoots raw, b/w, has easy to use full manual controls, it's fast... i love it.

Do you have any particular dimensions and weight in mind along with a price range? That would help narrow down the possibilities.

We I paid close to $300 for the Nikon and will probably be able to get about $250 out of it...so somewhere around there would work.

Bands,
I own a nikon 7900, 7.1 megapixel camera. My wife and I have really enjoyed the camera and works great for carrying in her purse for those spur of the moment shots of the kids. I have also used it for some professional shots that I have sold. It has a nice continuous shooting mode, very fast.
I would also suggest you look at the nikon P5100. It is a 12.1 megapixel point and shoot camera with full manual controls and a hot shoe for a mounted flash.
I find the 7900 is a great camera for carrying around all the time. My wife absolutely loves it.

The Canon Powershot G9 is a fine camera. I've had several chances to play with one at work and all I can say is WOW!

The Coolpix L11 is selling for $89.95 at Amazon. Use the difference and get an SB-600! I bought one just to get an inexpensive P&S with date stamp, but the job I needed it for fell through, so it's now my wifes' camera. When I showed it to her she said "that's small enough to fit in my purse". I have only taken 75 shots with it, but I am impressed so far. http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php...roductNr=25563

So, having read this thread and some others on the subject, I decided to go out and look at the Canon G9 and the Richoh P&S cameras. No such luck. I couldn't find any store that carries Ricoh. As for the Canon, no dice at Fry's, Best Buy, Wolf Camera. At Houston Camera Exchange, they had a slot on the shelf, but its out of stock on back order. I could get it from them for $499 and wait an indeterminate amount of time, and pay tax. Or I could get it cheaper from someplace on the net and have it before Xmas. Why do I even bother trying to support local camera shops anymore? (And yes, if a place had them in stock, and I could compare them, I would have bought from that store even if it was more expensive.)

They carry the G9 at Circuit City, and they have them in stock. Well all the Circuit City's in Austin have them in stock...

I'm still not real sure what I want. I need to sell mine first so it's not like I am in a huge hurry, I just wanted opinions.
Thanks to everyone that replied, hopefully after the first of the year I can find something.

Stanford:
Thanks for the tip. I checked the website, and it looks like Circuit City in Sugarland has the G9.
As for the Ricoh, I checked their national website, and it looks like there are only two authorized dealers in the U.S. -- Adorama and some company in California. Not really that convenient for Texans. I guess Ricoh either does well enough on web reviews, or it just isn't that interested in increasing market share.

Yup, just those two US retailers for Ricoh. Popflashphoto is a great company to deal with btw... better than Adorama.
Kind of a bummer if you really NEED to see it in person but after owning one and comparing 100% cropped image quality, I am sold for life. Well, a very long time at least.
I'm taking mine to Italy this week along with my D200 so after the new year I'll have some good comparison pics. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
