Found a lens - anyone lose one? - 07-25-2005, 10:23 AM

I'm not sure where to post this, so I chose this forum.

My brother found a very nice lens in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area a couple of weeks ago. If anyone has lost a lens, please let me know. You must be able to tell me what kind of lens it is, where you lost it and, if possible, the serial number. If you can satisfy my brother and I that it is your lens, it will be returned to you.

My brother is also filing a police report and has asked a couple of pro photogs in the area about the lens. So far, nothing. The lens appears to be in very good shape, but it is missing both end caps.

If no one can claim the lens in the next month or so, my brother plans to sell it.

Tim

I'm missing the 18-55 kit lens that comes with the 20D. I'll pm you the serial number if that is the lens you have.

Actually, if it had been me that lost this particular lens, I probably would have just died of a heart attack!

This is very nice, Tim. Thanks for the generous offer. :D

Now, could you provide a few more "hints" about the lens, so I can see if I've lost any of mine?

It's mine. It's a cylindrical shape, somewhat heavy, has a small glass opening on one end with some metal things that look like it would connect to something else and a bigger glass opening on the other end.

I had to try...it's a very generous thing for you to do...I know I nearly had a heart attack when my new 20D with new 24-70 f/2.8 L fell while attached to the tripod! All was good - just the battery grip came a bit loose and the CF card was a bit unseated. I can imagine if I had lost it!

Let me know when he decides to sell, as I may be in the market if it's a good one.
It's a great thing you did by posting here and filing a report, most would have just kept it, I <salute you & your brother>.

Well, you made me run for my bag I did cross DFW couple of weeks ago and I did see I am missing a 35-80 kit from my old cam (that should be with my other stuffs though and I always have lens caps on). Anyway, let us see what we got till now,

1. It is a lens
2. It does not have the lens caps on both sides
3. It is not 18-55 kit lens from 20D
4. An expensive lens ('L' ?)

If I can eliminate all possibilities, I am sure I can zero in on that lens

BTW, nice gesture Tim. I hope you can return it to the rightful owner.

Its a long shot but Canon may be able to trace the serial number back to a retail store. With the lens code showing the manufacturing date you can narrow down the sales date within two months. They may be able to search there files and locate the original owner.

Or you could just give it to me and I will do it for you. :D
