Sigma 100-300 f4 vs Canon 300 f4. - 01-15-2008, 02:10 PM

Have any of you on the forum done a head to head comparison with these two lenses? I have the Sigma, but am considering selling it and buying the Canon f4. I am not really unhappy with the Sigma and it is probably the sharpest lens that Sigma makes, but am wondering if the Canon lens is any sharper? I am going to Costa Rica in May and will be using 300mm and 300 plus a 1.4 extender most of the time. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used the 100-300 extensively after it was first introduced but that has been many years ago. I replaced it at that time with a 100-400 that I thought was better than the 100-300.

Also the 300 is sharper than the 100-400 @ 300mm but with a 1.4x TC attached it is pretty close. The latter has served me well but the main thing you have to consider is will you need the versatility of the zoom over the prime.

The IS is the deal breaker for me because with the 100-300 I always had to have some kind of support, tripod or monopod, or higher shutter speeds and all of my shooting with the 300 is HH.

Jim, thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward the IS, because I really love that feature. It's just I hate to spend the money if the 300 isn't any sharper than the Sigma 100 - 300. I've got a friend coming over tomorrow to let me try out the 300. I think I already know what the verdict will be.

You will love the 300 f4. I shoot aviation and TCU football and it is superb. Fast focus. . . great colors.
