I hope this doesn't start a big controversy, but I'm wondering what your opinions are for the quickest way to download JPEG and Raw to the computer. I've changed to a laptop and it seems to be slower, so I'm wondering if I need to change the way I do it and/or the program I do it with.

if your notebook has only a USB1 port, that would explain the slowdown.

If you have USB2 ports, make sure the reader you are using is USB2 as well.

If you have firewire on the notebook, a firewire card reader will speed things up even more.

If you have a PC Card/PCMCIA port, a PC Card adapter is a very convenient way to go, it's what i use. I'm not sure on the specific speed but it seems faster than USB2 on my wife's notebook.

Also, disabling un-needed applications running in the background will cause a considerable bump in speed.

I'm waiting for BrainDrain 2.0, which will let me transfer images from my camera to my laptop through osmosis.

I have a cheapo card reader that seems to work well with my MacBook. I imagine a faster memory card will also download images fast just like they save images faster, but I could be way off on that.

The fastest PCMCIA are the ones that are card bus 32 adaptors...

http://www.delkin.com/products/adapters/cardbus/ is what I have had for a while. Delkin was first to the game but I am sure by now there are others that use the full bus speed.

I download my Mk2n and XTi straight from the camera to my laptop and desktop. That is much faster than anything I tried. Putting the card in the laptop is incredibly slow, comparatively. Are you using the Canon software?

Fastest way to download is to insert card in card reader, use whatever method you want to copy the files (downloader software or select files to copy and drag them) and walk away from the computer. The most important step is to walk away from the computer. Things always seem to copy faster when you are not sitting there watching them.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It works for me.

Renae,

Zoombrowser doesn't do your download. EOS utilities downloads.

Most of the time when I am out and about, I will go to my favorite coffee shop, and set up my laptop, and then get the file tranfer going, then I will walk away and go order a coffee, say hi to a few folks, and then come back. Honestly I really have never noticed that it is slow or fast. I know that it is not as fast as a 100mb network connection, but it clips along at a good pace, and by the time I settle into my chair, it is finished or at least close.

If I am transferring them at the house to my desktop computer, then I will take the time to go put in a load of laundry, and by the time that is in the washer, then the files are usually across.

I do the drag and drop method in explorer, and one thing that I have noticed, is that if you will minimize the windows that are open, so that the graphics processor isn't being used refreshing the file count everytime a new file comes across , that it is much quicker.

Another tip for moving files, is to make certain that you are only trying to do one transfer operation at a time, multiple operations take an exponentially long time to complete.
