So I'm thinking that I want the new 5dmkii, but probably won't have access to it until December of this year, after Photokina. The question is, should I purchase a 5d now and use it until the 5dmkii comes out? do you think the price of the 5dmk1 would drop drastically once the mk2 comes out?? | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. Probably. Maybe. The current model may be all you need or desire & cheaper today then the new one down the road. This time next year, after they work all the bugs out, you can decide if you want to trade up or not. Meanwhile, you will have the use of a very good camera.

you make a great point, actually....considering canon's mess up with the mk3....man, it sucks to not trust the manufacturer of your tools.

I probably wouldn't be considering the 5D replacement until about this time next year in any case. Not necessarily due to new/untested considerations, but the basic financial consideration that it takes new products a couple of months at least to come down in price from their initial high sticker prices. And that gives some time for a variety of reviews to come out.

Buy what you need when you need it - not any earlier or later. There will always be something better in six months.
The 5D is a very capable camera.

The 5D is an awesome camera. It makes me a better person just by having it.
You will not be sorry if you get one now.
Unless the new one comes out right after you get it and the price drops to half of what you just paid. Then you would be sorry.
Hope that helps! | | | |

Sorry if this is a dumb question, LOL!, but generally how do prices react after a new camera has been released? Does the price drop after six months, a year, or remain steady until a new version or better one comes out? Thanks.

Depending on your budget and your deal making, take a look at the new ones at B&H - specially the kit with the 24-105. You can sell that lens to offset the cost.
Used ones are always going up for sale on different forums. They tend to range between $1,600-1,900.

Whenever a new model is released, there is a first wave of users of the old model who become instant early adopters of the new model. Most of them will look to sell their old model, which puts a temporary glut on the used markets. That drives prices down immediately. The prices will then tend to flatten out or come up just a bit, and then start to steadily drop as the old model is discontinued and the cameras on the used market get older and older.
Take a look at what you can buy a used 20D for now. Mine is almost 3 years old, and is still a great camera. I paid something like $12 - 1400 for the body. On Ebay, the body now sells for $500 or less.

Just kidding. I haven’t been looking but I’ll keep an eye out. If I come across anything I’ll let you know. In the meantime, if you haven't already, maybe you can place a want to buy/trade post. Ya never know. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
