Testament to the strength of memory cards.... - 03-08-2008, 10:22 AM

I just accidentaly ran an sd card through the washing machine last night. You know those things are tough when they can survive churning and solid emmersion like that. Upon removing the clothes and finding the card, I placed it on top of the power supply inside my computer where it is warm but not super hot, and left it to dry overnight. Popped it in the reader this morning and whattaya know--all data still there. I won't advertise the brand, but I bet most cards can take this kind of punishment and still keep going for long enough to recover data. Now how long it will take to speed corrosion of internals, I don't know...

I'll bet an old Microdrive would have never survived that trip!

solid state circuits are unaffected by water as long as they are not powered while it occurs. You can actually wash your computers motherboard in your dish washer along with all you cards, and as long as you dry them completely before powering they will work fine. However, if the water is not completely pure, any residual remnance such as soap or grease could have some conductivity and cause voltage irregularities and premature electromigration in the future. I would definitely back up that data just to be safe.

I've done it at lead 6 times... 3 with the same card with the same effect.... nothing but wearing the paper labels off of them.

some of the mid/higher end cards have an internal silicon coating as well.
