Project Slides (Optoma HD70) - 04-02-2008, 11:17 AM

My brother-in-law is getting a new HD projector for his house. I have some color slides (positives) that are mounted - and I want to project them onto the wall.

Will I be able to project my slides using this projector? I imagine I may need a small attachment to fit the slide right in front of the projector.

Will it be possibe - or will the light damage the slide?

If the projector doesn't have a standby screen when nothing is plugged in, and can just project "white" light then I would say yes provided you found a way to put it in front of the lens. The amount of heat generated by the bulb I wouldn't think would be all that different than that of a typical slide projector's lamp (but I don't know).

Now would the slide be in focus if rigged up in front of the lens? You're guess is as good as mine.

I bet you could find used 35mm projectors cheap nowadays.

my brother in law said the light is white in color and that the lens can be focused on that projector

woohoo! i would go out and get a 35mm projector - but why bother, when i can just go over to his house and project 'em!

i just hope he doesnt put the projector on the ceiling!

In a standard slide projector the slide is positioned between the light source and the lens so that the slide can be brought into focus. How do you propose to position the slide between the lamp and the lens?

Well if that's the case, then I suppose I won't be able to place the slide in that location.

I thought I would be able to place the slide in front of the lens - create some sort of makeshift attachment and place the slide directly in front of the lens. Since the lens can be focused I thought that would work.

I will still try the HD projector out with slide in front and see how it works - I really don't want to buy a 35mm film scanner, as I am more curious about the idea and want to first see results in some fashion.

Chances are the focus thing won't work- the principal with the projector is the same as a camera lens. Instead of bringing light in and focusing it onto the film plane, it's projecting light out, but still from the same focused film plane. At least that's what my brain seems to think is how it works. ;)

Hmm, I think you have a point there. I guess I'll just have to scan my slides or make prints from them - until I come across a more viable projector.

A used slide projector would be cheaper than a film scanner. Or you might find a slide copier that will fit your camera. The cheap ones were fixed focus, but the nicer ones were actually bellows units (that you could use for macro work) with a slide holder attachment.
