A true snob would insist on you getting something liike the Leica 21mm. Not that snobbery doesn't have its merits.

I am heading to Yellowstone in July so I will also use the wide angle glass there
You said ADULT Advice ...
ADULTS Think about how often they will use a 10 or 11 mm esp when they go FF.
The few times u want wider than 17 or 16mm - use PS Panoramic Stitching.
Thats what I am going to do.
The 16 - 35 2.8L is nice but the 17 - 40 4.0L is a bargin and more useable for me.
Anyway think twice cut once ...
You should have L when FF anyway ... and then you will use your 30 like how much ...

Dan, I have the 10-22 and use it on an Xti. You make a good point about effective focal length. I get a little parralax distortion but nothing like you'd get with a fisheye. I'm not a fan of ProMaster but can't give you a reason why, I just don't think it's in the same league. As you already know, the 10-22 won't work on a 5D. The wife just got one and gave it a try - major vignetting in the corner. If you can afford the 10-22, I'd go that way. You'll get more money back from it than you'll save by getting the ProMaster.

Thanks Teddington. Going with the Canon seems to be the consensus. It seems like a well built lens and a solid performer. I was leaning in that direction already but wanted to cull the wisdom of the TPF community before I laid out the cash. Thanks for your input!

I love my 10-22 (view examples here and here). So if you think you will shoot ultra wide a lot, it is a solid choice.

Dan, Terry was a little wrong on the info he gave you. THe 10-22 won't FITon a5D (white sq vs red dot). I was using my Tamron Di II AF11-18mm F4.5-5.6 which did the vinetting. THis is a great lens and while it will fit on my 5D, it is not made for the full sensor.

I borrowed the Canon 10-22 for many of my last few trips as it's excellent for Landscapes and Architecture shots. I wish I had it available when I went to Rome a few years back (would have saved me piecing together 18mm shots to get a wide shot).

I'll finally be buying my own copy in the next month, but am also considering the Tokina since it's reviews are just as good.

Hey thanks all guys for the insight and suggestions. I think you guys have helped me decide on the Canon 10-22. I am looking forward to working with it before I head off to Italy.

I was going to buy the 10-22mm but since I am waiting on the 5D MkII I decided to get a 16-35mm f2.8L II
