Need Some Adult Guidance Canon 10-22 or Tamron 11-18? - 04-03-2008, 02:09 PM

I am looking for an ultrawide angle lens to take with me to Rome in May. I stopped by Camera Stop in Plano and the sales guy showed me the Canon lens and a ProMaster lens which he told me was the Tamron marketed by a third party. I have done some internet research and am leaning toward the Canon. My reasons are 1) Canon quality and constr4uctions seems superior; 2) I am using it on a 30D and even if I go FF in the future I will probably hang on to the 30D so I will have the lens for a while; 3) Appeared to be less vignetting on the Canon.

What do you all think? Has anybody been disappointed with either lens? Anybody use or test both and have an opinion to share?

Thanks!

Dan

In my mindset - I would never use a non Canon Lens on a Canon Camera and suggest L Glass.
I have 20D and just ordered 17 - 40 F4L for my Yosemite Trip in 2 weeks.
I am planning on the 5D replacement in the fall.
10 or 11 mm seems too wide for even an APS - C sensor.

Thanks for the quick reply PIC. I am with you on the L glass, but there is no L available in the 10mm range to my knowledge. The 17mm on a 30D is equivalent to 27mm where the 10 is only 16mm, which is a big difference in angle of coverage imho.

I am heading to Yellowstone in July so I will also use the wide angle glass there

I'd stick with a Canon lens for its resale value if you decide it's not for you in the future.

And when I want to go full-frame, I put some film in one of my 35 mms!

I've got the Canon 10-22. On my last two trips to China, it barely came off the camera. It takes great pictures. The reason it's not an "L" is primarily because its an EF-S lens, and then maybe it lags some in build quality. Image quality, however, is superb.

I have no experience with the Tamron. If you did go full frame, there would be little point to keeping the 10-22. The better quality of a 5D combined with, say, a 17-40 would be better than using this wide angle on the 30D. If I go to full frame, I will still keep the 1.6 crop lens for telephoto, but don't think I would try to use it again for any wide angle stuff.

The Canon 10-22 is a very nice lens. It stays on my 20d all the time.
But now I shoot with the 5D 99% of the time anyway.

I may be a brand snop or whatever, but I personally don't like 3rd party lenses regardless of your body brand. I shoot nikon and only want to get nikkor glass. For one, the brand name stuff seems to have better re-sell value as I believe has already been mentioned and the quality is always better to my eye when you buy Canon glass or Nikkor glass over a Tamron or Sigma. Just my opinion, though.

I just got this for my Nikon, excellent lens especially for the price. Of the reviews I read of all the ultra wides, the Tamron got the lowest against the Sigma, Tokina, and Nikkor. The Canon gets good ratings too (I wasn't looking for reviews on that though).

I used to be a "manufacturer snob" when it came to my camera gear. Money and Priorities change though.

Thanks guys. Hey Metalhead, I don't c u as a brand snob! You provided good advice that backed up what others said. I will check out the links Spec A. I have found that buying the best quality I can, even if it means waiting for a bit, always pays off in the long term. That is why I am hesitant on just going for the big savings on the Tamron. Don't get me wrong I am all about saving hard earned $$$$$, as long as the quality is there.

Awesome!
I'm glad to hear it went to a good home and is getting used.

Here is a link to some vacation photos where I used the 10-22mm a lot.
