Where do you go for web photography information?? - 12-09-2004, 11:08 PM

First let me say "great work Abel !!!". Great idea well executed. Thanks for the heads-up you gave me after seeing my interest at photo meetup site.
I'm a doc here in San Antonio and am surrounded by amateur photogs and will spread the word.

My question...where do you all go to read about photo equipment, techniques etc? Of course I hope that soon the response will be "here dummy". My interest is obviously digital. My tired old Nikon 35mm is pretty dusty.

My favorite equipment review site is:
http://imaging-resource.com/

My favorite forums are on dpreview(several million posts) and here I find a wealth of info. Trolls and fight-seekers are an increasing nuisance on those boards at times. The lighting forum and the photo retouching forum is populated by a lot of knowlegable people.
www.dpreview.com/forums

I stick my photos on pbase for less than $2 monthly for 200 megs.
www.pbase.com/vernix

Any of your favorites??

One last question...is a UV filter adequate to protect my 12-24mm lens from this guy?

What's up doc? Sorry.... had to do it. :)

The photo forums I frequent are:

The Photo Forum: ( http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/ )
The people are so nice there and are welcoming to all levels of experience. That's a big thing with me because I have visited several forums where people are photo snobs. Instead of offering ideas for photo improvement, they would look down their nose at people's equipment or experience level. It is definitely NOT like that at The Photo Forum. It is a very tight knit community and people are very supportive and friendly. No one says "That Sucks". They come up with positive, friendly criticism.

Whew.... jumped onto the soap box accidentally.

Another place I visit is the forums at the Digital Camera Resource Page ( http://www.dcresource.com/ ). I love Jeff's site for camera information and I browse through the forums ( http://www.dcresource.com/forums/ ). Most people who go there are looking for advice on buying a new camera, but I have learned several things over there.

And of course now my forums have been rounded out with this site. I was really looking for something like this with a local angle and I'm so glad that Abel started it.

welcome! and thanks for helping spread the word! the more local area photogs we get the better!

i visit www.fredmiranda.com for their forums quite regularly. i also visit dpreview from time to time but find myself more at Fred's forums.. there is a ton of info there and it seems that there is not too much you have to sift thru in order o find what you need...

as far as UV filters, i dont use them. i seldomly use a polarizing filter and a Neutral density filter but thats it. the way i look at it is i paid a ton for these lenses because of the glass quality and i dont really want to put another layer of glas on it that may not be the same quality.

now in some situations where i may be photographing something where i may get dirt or mud or crap all on ym glass then yes i would prolly use a UV but everyday use i opt not to...

you will find many people will perfer the mand many will not. its kinda like the nikon vs canon argument. you have people on both sides so do some research, think about it and make your decision as to what YOU feel comfortable with...

hope this helps some... if u do get a UV, dont get a cheapy. i spent like $140 on my polarizer b/c of the better glass.

I also daily go to DPreview.com's forums, and visit Fred Miranda's every few days.
Also used to spend alot of time on http://www.onlinephotographers.com/ but not so much anymore.

A good place to post images for reviews and review others' work is http://www.photosig.com/
It's also a good place to search for a particular camera and see what others are doing with it.

Yahoo has some great user groups (either web viewable or by mailing list) that you can join. They probably have one or more for your camera. I belong to 4 for the Canon 20D and 3 for the Oly C4000.
