This is a discussion on Austin camera stores within the Equipment Talk forums, part of the Photography Information category; I get immediate service when I go there. The staff are constantly asking if they can assist me with anything....

I never have any problems with customer service there. In fact, I just went yesterday to buy a $40 umbrella and the gentleman was eager to answer my questions. Perhaps it's because I bathe on a daily basis

Probably better to go during the week when it isn't like a zoo. And that goes for any retail establishment.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but that's what the search function is for right?

I'm new to the Austin area and looking for camera stores in Austin. I see that Precision is still around, but I'm wondering if there are any alternatives -- preferably south of the river.

I'm looking to rent a lens, and just need a local shop in general.

Nope, no real alternatives in Austin. Especially not if you want to do rental stuff.

Never had a bad service experience at Precision...

Precision is an enormous asset for Austin. You will only find comparable camera stores in Houston or Dallas in Texas and no where else, so I do as much of my business with them as I can. I have found that if I go to them and (for example) tell them I am about to buy a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II and I found a deal on the net for that lens at $2,000, they offered me the same lens for $2150, which was a substantial discount. But you gotta ask and you gotta ask the boss.

As for the clerk that told the lady what f-stops are, answers are appropriate for the level of the customer. Often sales people get caught up in trying to educate a buyer when that is not appropriate and not what the buyer wants. They often want a simple, fast answer that is useful to them. Explaining f-stops is a path that you want to be sure you need to go down as it can deteriorate to a long, highly complex (to casual photographers) explanations that often only confuse them. Sounds like the lady got general useful information, and it's hard to go wrong with a 50mm lens.
