I checked Nikon and Leica but another favorite is the Kiev and pre-war Contax II..

I invested in a Canon 40D just in time to start reading about the 50D. Regarding brand...I had to go Canon due to an existing arsenal of L series glass (family heirlooms). I was fortunate enough to have a grandfather with good taste in equipment.

I had been following the news with DSLRs for a number of years before I was finally able to make the jump and get one myself (thanks to a bonus at work). All the DSLR firsts that I read about seemed to constantly be on the Canon side of things (e.g. the D30, the 1Ds, the Digital Rebel, the 5D). Once I did more research it seemed that more of the lenses I would want were on the Canon side of things also... and several of them were significantly less expensive than their Nikon equivalents too. So there was never really much question as to which camp I'd jump into. I'm perfectly happy for Nikon to stir things up a bit though and give Canon more impetus to make shiny new stuff for me to lust after...:-)

I have Canon because I got a good deal on a gently used 10D with 28-135IS lens from a semi-pro wedding photographer who was upgrading to the new 20D. I recently upgraded to a refurbished 40D.
If I had been offered a good deal on a Nikon back then, I'd be shooting with Nikon now. I'm glad that the deal was on a Canon.

I'm going to show my ignorance here...what's awesome about Leica? They have a hefty price tag and I'm assuming they are worth it. Someone please get me up to speed.

I have a 1995 National Geographic Video "The Photographers"
All of the photogs were using film. Most used Nikon. There was one Leica. I'd be interested in knowing what they're using now. I'm betting on Canon DSLRs.
When I worked on newspapers from the early 70s to mid 80s, 35mm Nikon was the PJs' camera of choice. When I returned to newspapers in 2000, Canon Digital was the overwhelming choice. It was still that way in the DFW area when I retired in 2006.

Still Pentax. I'm currently using the K20D, and bought a K100D Super from Ritz as a backup. I also bought a Canon G9 as my P&S/glovebox camera.
