Yes, I never found 24mm not wide enough on my 30D. While it is very wide on my 5D, it worked great on my crop camera. In fact I used my 24-105 on my 30D a few months ago when I went to oahu. I rarely needed to use my 10-22 or 70-200.

on my xt/40D, i've used a 28-105 3.5-4.5, 28-135IS, tokina 28-70, tokina 28-80, and lastly a 28-70 2.8L. i always found the 28 not wide enough and the 70 not long enough. looks like i may have to give this a look. :P my 17-40 feels a bit lacking....

I've got the 28-105, too, and it was perfect on my film camera. I agree that 28 really isn't wide enough now, and the variable apertures with the zoom are a bummer. the 24-105 is on my list, but so is the 17-40 (maybe. I don't want to spend about $700 on a "lacking" lens).

Canon 17-55 IS(wide to medium), Canon or Sigma 10-22/20(super wide), or a Canon 28 1.8/Sigma 30 1.4(standard prime). These are the choices that i would consider if i could only choose one lens. The 17-55 IS is nice if you want wide and normal and IS.

thanks for all the suggestions!

i think i'm gonna go with the 10-22 and bring my kit lens along also so i'll somewhat of a super wide to medium range

i am still think about renting the 24-105 though. any reason i should pick it over the 10-22?

I rented a Canon 10-22 for a trip to Europe. I ended up using my Tamron 17-50 f2.8much more often. It may have been because I am not used to using an ultra wide angle zoom. If you can borrow or rent a lens for a few days it will help you try it out. I prefer carrying the lightest and fastest lenses. That being said, most of your photos will be outside, so adequate wide angle is a good idea.

Mine... but they don't leave home without me

If I were me I would take a 16-35 and a 70-200 f2.8

Where are you going?

I went twice last year and used my 17-40 f4L the majority of the time. I also used my 70-200 f2.8L. Take a tripod, flash, and a polarizing filter.

Here is the Oahu post from my trip

Here is the thread I posted before I went to Maui asking the same question.

If you do nothing else buy the "Revealed" books!!! Maui Revealed, Oahu Revealed, etc. They are by Wizard Publications. They are the best book by far of any Hawaii books you will ever purchase. The locals are getting pissed because there is so much insider information in the books. Here is the link for Maui Revealed from the TPF book link.

Buy the book, buy the book, buy the book!!! You will not regret it.

Have a great time.

Mike

I took my 75-300 and 18-55 on my trip to Maui last summer. Got a lot of great shots. Wish I could go back i had some rain on the Hana Highway and was to afraid to really take out the camera.
