I'm going to hawaii in about a month as my graduation gift from my parents. Now i'm only a novice photographer shooting for about 8 months and only 5 months with my canon rebel xt. I just need some input on which lens would be recommended taking on a trip like this.
thanks! i really appreciate it | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

medium telephoto 17-100mm or so. IS and f1.8 If you find one, I'll buy it from you. But, get a zoom that is light weight, fast, and has IS.

I bought a lens (24-105 f/4 L IS) as part of a kit with the intention of selling it. What I've learned over my last two trips is that it is a great all around lens for outdoor work. I shoot with the 5D so it's wide enough.
When I traveled to Hawaii a couple of years ago, I traveled with a 20D, 24-70 f/2.8 L, 70-200 f/2.8 L, and 50 f/1.4. The only lens that left the bag was the 24-70 f/2.8 L.
Unless you're going for wildlife/animal photography, something in that range is the most versatile. I learned many years ago that the first type of lenses one buys are the longer zooms but as one gains an appreciation for photography you move toward the wider lenses.
Hope that helps some. | | | |

If you can afford it, that 24-105 f/4 L is a great "all around" lens for travel!

When I went in 2006 I took two lenses, 18-70 f3.5-4.5 and a 70-300 f4.5-5.6, along with my D70. I got some great pictures with both lenses. If you decide to take in the USS Arizona tour, Pearl Harbor is an active military base. You will not be allowed to take in a gadget bag. I took the 18-70 but wished I had taken the 70-300.
If you are taking just one lens, my suggestion is the 70-300.

You can use all of my lenses, but I can't let them out of my sight so you'll have to take me with you.
I've been considering the 24-105, but like John asked above, on a crop body it won't really be a "wide angle" lens. Still, on vacation, it might be wide enough. And the versatility on the medium and long ends of the zoom would be good to have. It's heavy, but not so big and heavy that it would kill you to carry around.

Manufacturer or 3rd party? price range?
I like a wide range lens, wide to mid telephoto for general purpose. Just remember that a 17 for digital is ruffly like a 24 to 28 full frame (35mm).
Tamron, Sigma and Tokina have some good midrange walking lenses for most bodies.
Tamron have Di (digital integrated or both) and DiII (digital only, aps-c).
Sigma are DG (both) and DC (digital only, aps-c)
Canon EFS digital only 300d, 400d, XT, XTI, 20/30/40D
The Canon efs 17-85 "is" is good lens I keep one on the 20D, the ef 28-135 "is" is good but not as wide on the XT as an efs lens.
I like wide lenses great for landscapes, buildings etc... I also use a Tamron 18-200 XR Di II

Even though I'm not planning a jump to full-frame digital, for my Canons I'm not buying any of the EF-S lenses because I want to invest only in what I'll be able to use when I do. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
