SCARED, Canon Firmware Question - 06-11-2008, 07:31 AM

I got a message saying that there was an Update to the Firmware on my Canon 30D.

I am just wondering how important this is. I mean, is it a must, or is it something I could do without. I am asking becasue frankly I'm afraid of updating it. Even though the Directions are clear, I am afraid I will do something wrong, and end up not being able to use my camera.

Can anyone shed some light on this. Has anyone out there updated their Firmware?

I've never updated my firmware (20D, XTi), but I know what you mean. I updated the firmware for my laptop one time and it never would load correctly, gave me an error message every time I powered it up ... found out later there was a problem with that update, I deleted it, problem solved.

My opinion: if your camera functions flawlessly and is compatible with everything you use it for, no it's not important. Others might know better, though.

I've updated the firmware on my 5D. It's pretty quick and painless.
Make sure you have fresh batteries in your camera.

I've updated the firmware on my Mark III before and on my 30D, like Jake said quick and painless. As for what it does, the canon site should explain what the firmware changes. I've always found them to be positive updates, but that's just me.

So just follow the Directions, and everything should be good?

Yes,you can also make a backup of your current firmware on a flash card just in case you do encounter problems. You can then restore back to the older version.

Here is what it does:

This firmware update (Version 1.0.6) incorporates the following fixes and improvements:
# It allows the latest lens names to be recorded in the Exif information of images taken.
# It adds lenses that are compatible with the Digital Photo Professional 3.2 lens aberration correction function.

Version 1.0.6 firmware update is for use with cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.5. If you already have Version 1.0.6, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

It may also fix things that Canon doesn't want to admit doesn't work right.

Depending on the updates, sometimes firmware helps. I always update mine to whatever is the latest. Here's what I could find out about the latest update on the 30D.

This firmware update (Version 1.0.6) incorporates the following fixes and improvements:
It allows the latest lens names to be recorded in the Exif information of images taken.
It adds lenses that are compatible with the Digital Photo Professional 3.2 lens aberration correction function.

Version 1.0.6 firmware update is for use with cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.5. If you already have Version 1.0.6, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Edit.......oops Laurie beat me to it......

I agree with Jake.
I started with Nikon and did a couple of firmware updates. It tweaked little things that were not mentioned in the firmware update description.

When I went to Canon's 20D I did a couple of updates. Same thing.

Make sure you understand and follow their directions. Fresh batteries are a must.

Once you've done it, you'll be a pro. It's not like wiping a hard drive and then reinstalling the operating system.

I update as soon as new firmware is released. It has ALWAYS improved the operation of my camera.
Just think of Firmware Updates for your camera, as you would think of "Service Packs" for your computer's OS.

In Firefox I am getting some type of XML HTML error code and in IE I can't see any update. I have a 30D, registered, and received no update notice. Can anyone provide a link for me so that I might get it downloaded?
