LCD Monitor Decisions - 06-11-2008, 11:36 AM

I've decided to change from my old CRT to a flat panel. I feel that I should get one that has an S-IPS panel. I don't see that I really need a 24" or bigger so I'm trying to decide between the NEC2090UXI and the LaCie320. They are about the same price. I have the X-Rite Eye One Display calibration package on order. I've noticed that the LaCie monitors can be ordered with the Blue Eye Pro package which makes me wonder - does the LaCie calibrate better with the Blue Eye, or would the Eye One be just as good. Any imput on the pros and cons of one of these monitors over the other would be welcome. I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these. Also if someone has strong feelings as to why I should spend the extra bucks for a 24" speak now. I'm currently just a part time photographer and am using a 19" CRT which seems large enough.

Get a BIG Colorful Flat P Monitor ...
Watch out for specs like contrast brigtness and refresh time.
Brighter and Contrasty is the WoW factor
and refresh is more for Games and movies.
They all calibrate.
Bigger is Better {given same specs} !!!

I don't care about games or movies. Trying to make a decision for photoshop work. Also my pocketbook and space is limited.

I just got a 52" lcd HD monitor.

Anyway, wish I could help you there but I figured all LCD monitors were basically the same. I have a 19" dell monitor (not wide screen) and I do a lot of pshopping with it. Works for me.

i've looked at a lot of the stats and specs. I made the post in the hopes that someone is familiar with the two particular monitors I mentioned and would have some information on them.

Photoshop works with 19" CRT is rather small. You'll see the advantage of big screen, quicker workflows and better yet, try the dual screen setup and you'll love every minutes of it.

If you in the budget, try the 'web-secret' cheaper monitors that uses the same S-IPS panel that cost $1000-$2000 but less. Hp-2065 is one of them, it's somewhere around $350. The newer model was said to use a cheaper A-MVA panel but mine came with S-IPS panel , purchased last month at local store. It's easy to tell the panel with HP, they printed it out loud on the box (unlike samsung and dell)

My earlier post about this hp2065..

I would rather pick up two 2065 than one 24" or one of them lacie 20". Dual monitor rocks.

Not entirely, that's for Entertainment and gaming. Nowadays al-cheapo TN panel come with big numbers on paper but that most are not suitable for photo-editing works. Inadequate color reproduction and terrible viewing angles. Actually i have to turn down the brightness of some of the monitor, it hurts me eyes.

Joanne,

Higher contrast rating and greater brightness settings aren't always the answer or better.

There has been LOTS of discussion on this on the forum. Please search on monitors and read a little and I think you will find some good info.

Second, I looked at the price range that you mentioned above. My choice of a really good LCD in that same range would be the Ezio Color Edge CE 210W. LINK

If 21" will work for you, I think you should consider the Ezio as well as the others listed. Secondly, you can get them locally at HCE...I think the going price on the CE210W is like $1175.00. A little more than your two listed, but you get to pick it up and won't have to pay shipping!

thanks for the info. I'll look at the HP. I actually have a dual monitor setup currently. The 19" just has the image and the 17" lcd has all the toolbars/actions/plug-in, etc. I agree that you could never use a standalone 19" for photoshop

Not sure if you knew about this site, but I used it a lot when I was monitor shopping:

http://flatpanels.dk/panels.php

it'll tell you the different types of panels that are in most monitors these days. S-IPS, TN, AMA, etc. etc.

I've pretty much read everything I could find on the forum already. So much of it is a year old though. After reading all the discussions, I'd narrowed it down to NEC, Eizo or LaCie. The NEC and LaCie are around $800. Since that is already a lot more than I wanted to spend it isn't too likely that I'll go another $300. I don't really need a widescreen because I have a second LCD monitor that I use for anything other than the image in photoshop. Am I going to be sorry later? What is the advantage of the Eizo over the NEC or Lacie? The resolution on the NEC & Lacie are 1600x1200 and the Eizo is 1680x1050. I'm not sure of the color specs, the Eizo says 14-bit color processing, the NEC says 24 bit. That doesn't sound right.

Thanks Jason, I've been to several sites like that now. Seems like the S-IPS is definitely the best for photography.

Joanne,

This is another of those Chevy vs. Ford, Canon Vs. Nikon things. LMAO

I prefer Ezio. They display 97% of the AdobeRGB Gamut and I have seen the difference first hand. I use other brands in connection with the Ezio as well...why? Cause I can't afford three Ezio's on my work station! Just the MAIN monitor.

I went to a seminar on color managment in Chicago a couple of years back. They placed close to 100 monitors under black foam core, just the screen exposed (no brand name etc.) and all were calibrated the same, light the same and you were given a print to walk around and compared the LCD's to and make a decision...1, 2, 3. Ezio won hands down. Your other two brands were in the top 5. Dells, Apples and others...weren't even in the Top 10.

I replace my color critical monitors with Ezio monitors now. They are great. Just like anything else that is designed specifically for an industry, they are expensive! Upwards of $3,400 for some of the top of the line, premium edition monitors that absolutely blow away the competition.

Is this one 300.00 better than the NEC or LaCie? That is probably something you will have to answer for yourself.
