Digital Rebel Problem - 06-12-2008, 02:05 PM

My Canon Digital Rebel won't turn on. Looking at several posts online it appears that a fuse might have blown, but would require sending it in ($250 estimate) or soldering around it to fix or replace it. Should I tinker with it or is it just time to replace it?

Is this an original 6.3 mp DigiRebel? If so, great camera!

Guessing you've tried new or different batteries, lenses, facial expressions to get it to revive. If you still feel a kinship with it, maybe get it fixed. However, getting it fixed means you've put money into an old camera ... who knows if something else is about to go wrong?

If this is an original DigReb, be aware that the newer Rebel models are smaller in size. You might want to try finding a used prosumer camera (10D is solid and you can probably find one for a little more than the repair estimate).

I would agree with Todd, a good used 10d can be had for about the same as the repair price, and it would be a nice upgrade for you.

Original Digital Rebel - 06-12-2008, 04:10 PM

Yes, it is the original 6.3Mb Digital Rebel. It has treated me well. No signs of problems until this past weekend when it just died. I was thinking of going with the 40D. I have a B&H gift card and see that they have it for $940.

The 40D would be a fine upgrade! Buy one for me while you're on B&H, will ya?

I have both an original Rebel and a 20D and I'd sell you either one for I dunno, $940...

I had this problem with my 300D a few years ago. I went to turn it on one day and nothing. Switched out batteries and still nothing.. Thankfully it was still covered under warranty so Canon fixed free. It seems it had something to do with the power board and they had to replace it.

Oh Well - 06-13-2008, 11:08 PM

That is what I have been reading online. I was hoping someone had a similar incident and found a quick fix, but I don't think that is going to happen. Guess I will just give in and purchase a new body. I hate to part with the $, but am excited about upgrading to the 40D. Anyone know how well the 420EX works with the 40D? From what I read, it should work just the same as with the Digital Rebel.

The 420 will work OK. Eventually, you may want to get a 550 or 580 so you can use the 420 as a slave/strobe.
