Purchase a Canon dedicated flash like the 430EX so you can take advantage of TTL flash.

Here is a 550EX on Craigslist. It is the predecessor to the 580EX. One step up from the 430EX.

Sorry, flashes are not that cheap.

If budget is priority, go for the Sigma 500 flash. There's one currently for sale here on this forum for $150. It's a great flash for your needs.
I bought the Sigma 10-20mm lens from him, and it looks brand new!

If that's still too much, I used the Sunpak 383 forever on my xt before getting a used Canon flash. I think I paid like $80 for it, new.

get a flash that has a tilt head. practice with it on manual. bounce the flash.
learn how to use the flash in all kinds of situations. Then, when you have the bucks to get a really good flash, you'll already be an expert. Digital is so great for this. You can go out and take 1000 bad exposures and it only cost you a couple of batteries and a bunch of time.

I'd also recommend one with a swivel head (side to side) as well as tilting (up and down). Other flashes that will work well with the XTi are the Canon 380EX (it's old; doesn't swivel) and the 420EX (made for the original Digital Rebel). You should be able to pick up one or the other for about a $100, maybe a little more.

Get used to the flash and your new lens for awhile, and then depending on what you want to shoot the most look at lenses for the purpose.

When I got my flash I opted for the model with the tilt and swivel head, and I am surprised how much I use the swivel option. I also recommend a diffuser. I have a Sto-Fen for when I travel, and a Fong WhaleTail Reporter for when I am local. The Fong gear isn't cheap, but I think the Sto-Fen was only $15 or so.

A good option for little money for you may be one of the newer diffusers that works with the pop up flash.

I agree, if you're gonna buy a flash, it really should have tilt & swivel. It'll give you the most flexibility and shooting options. Both of the flashes I mentioned have tilt & swivel.
