Question Duplex Photo Scanner - 06-18-2008, 08:57 AM

So, I have this large box of photos from my mother, and each one has writing on the back telling who the people are. So far, I have only found one photo scanner which will scan both sides of the photo at once and that is the Kodak S1220. It looks like a great scanner, but it's like 1600.00. Now, if I was in business doing this all the time, that wouldn't be so bad, but for a one time project...Ouch.

So, do any of you pros that do this for a living offer such a service, or perhaps already have a 1220 that you use for this? Or, is there a scanner you would recommend for scanning front and back of images, from 3x5 to 8x10, preferably to a single multi-page tiff in order to keep the front and back together?

Just curious. I know this has to have been handled before by someone.

tHERE ARE A NUMBER OF DUPLEX SCANNERS ON THE MARKET. i WOULD GO TO fUJITSUS WEB SITE OR CANON'S WEB SITE AND EVALUATE THEM. lOTS OF MODELS WITH V ARYING SPEEDS AND CAPABILITIES. i PREFER fUJITSU, HOWEVER THATS A PERSOMNAL PREFERENCE. DUPLEX SCANNERS ARE EXPENSIVE.

Michael,

Let me ask you why are you looking to scan both sides at the same time? there is a bunch of flatbed scanners under 100 and will do a nice job scanning your prints.

Yes, I have a flat bed, and it's taking forever to get both sides. The reason for both sides is because these are old family photos and the names of the people are written on the back. Also some dates and other information about the pictures. Sure, I could manually key all the information into the metadata, but I was looking for an easier approach. :) Just can't bring myself to by the $1600 scanner, although, I guess I could always ebay it when I was done. :)
