Brownie etc. - 07-05-2008, 11:17 AM

I recently came across a Brownie Target Six-16. I ordered some film for it, but I haven't received it yet. Does anyone have any tips or interesting things to do with it before I start playing with it? Also I am considering buying a Lomographic Holga. Would it be a good investment?

What's a Brownie Target Six-16?

What's a Lomographic Holga?

I've said it before. I'll say it again. If you want to use medium film, and I think everyone should, buy a real medium format camera. They start at $Free and go completely out of $ight. Somewhere between free and $200 you can get a very nice Mamiya, Yashica or Minolta twin lens reflex camera.

If you want the "Holga Feeling", put a filter on a good TLR and smear on some Vaseline. Or shoot through Saran Wrap. There are lots of ways to make a good lens look funky. There are no ways to make a funky lens look good.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

The "tags" on this thread have "120" film. Did you order 120 film for the Brownie Six-16? I could be wrong, but I'd bet $5 that camera took 616 size film. You might try: http://www.filmforclassics.com/

As for the Holga, don't buy it from the Lomographic Society - they want too much. Freestyle has them: http://www.freestylephoto.biz/e_main.php

Having said that, I can't say I disagree with Wayne. I just don't get the whole lomographic/Holga thing. But, to each his own. There's a bunch of people out there using them. However, playing with an ancient Brownie can be fun, if it's one you can get film for (and processing if you don't do your own).

If you are really seeking info on such things, I would suggest http://www.apug.org as a better place than this (no offense TPF)

The folks at APUG know a lot about all things film related. Be careful: Don't mention the "D" word or you might get fried! Grinning.
