I tried it and a Tokina 12-24 and preferred the latter. The Canon was more prone to CA than the Tokina and the TOK had a constant f/4 aperture across the FL range. I like the contrast and color of the Tokina better and it was about $200 less.

If you have to have 10mm on the wide side the Tokina won't help but 12mm was wide enough for me on a 1.6x crop. You can get it here new shipped to your door for $469

Another good alternative is the Sigma but I have never had good luck with Sigmas.

or at B&H for 499.95 before shipping.

I have the Canon 10-22 and love it. It is one of those "could of been a L" type lens. Very sharp. While I did not compare it to the Tokina, I did compare it to a friends Tamron and another friends Sigma. I just wish it would work on my 5D.

Jim is certainly one of our resident lens experts. I trust his mentorship wholeheartedly and take his word as the Gospel. I purchased my 10-22 without the benefit of Jim’s advice but even so, I’ve had a lot of fun shooting wide with mine. Here are a couple of fun shots from my 10-22. ~Blue Moon

Also love the 10-22.
I kept borrowing some from friends, then finally bought my own. I was tempted to get the Tamron,Tokina or Sigma. But based on reviews, quality control issues on some, etc, I spent the extra 2 hundred for the 10-22.
I don't regret it.
