Broken tripod mount, help - 07-30-2008, 03:11 PM

Yesterday evening while doing some shooting, my 1Ds and 70-200 f2.8 lens came sliding off my tripod, the camera and lens are fine, however the tripod mount (collar) is cracked and useless. I have scoured the net, contacted Canon in Jersey and nothing. The only collar I could locate is one for an f4L glass, needless to say a no-go. If anyone has any tips. and or clues as to where I can secure a new collar, I would be most grateful.

Regards,

Thomas

A quick search by me yields the same results...I don't suppose the Sigma equivalent would be the same?...How did it come off the tripod (I own the same thing and don't want it happening to me)...Ben

I did no secure the tripod plate into the head and as I was walking with the tripod over my shoulder, I heard a sicking crash of camera and lens hitting the ground. Fortunately I was in a wooded area and the rig hit soft dirt as opposed to concrete, it could have been much worse.

I can't believe Canon wouldn't have that as an available part.

I can only imagine how I'd feel if I heard that crash right behind me. When I carry my camera on the tripod, over my shoulder, I also try to hold the camera strap so a fall should end up at my hip. I've gotten lax on that but this post may help me rethink my actions.

I suppose duct tape and super glue are out of the question. If so, I'd try some camera repair stores where a dead lens may yield a part or two.

I'm sure it is a repair part available from canon.

But since that's not my line of work, here's some folks to call:
http://www.havelcamera.com/

if they can't fix it, it's really broke.....

http://www.f20c.com/stuff/canon/part...%20L%20USM.PDF

The "tripod mount ring" which is the correct name of the part, as a whole is on page 5 of the PDF. I called Canon Parts department 732-521-7230, they don't have any in stock right now but they are on the way. $116.73

I pondered as to whether i should try super glue but decided against it.

I am normally much more careful when doing such things, especially transporting my gear but I was in too much of a hurry and that was the end result. Fortunately I did not lose a $2500.00 camera or $900 lens in the process, my guardian angel must have been on duty.

$116.73. They are more proud of this ring than the lens hood.

Yes, it was your lucky day.

Thanks for the Ebay links, Daniel. For what ever reason I never even thought of Ebay. I purchased the mount from the dealer in Hong Kong, as they had the actual Canon mount, the dealer in Mainland China appeared to have a knockoff.

Again thanks for all the suggestions and advice.

Thomas
