Wow. I didn't think the camera would move around that much with only the shutter actuation. That's crazy.

So are there two curtains to every camera shutter? or just the D3? One that drops to the bottom, and one that drops from the top?

That's standard on SLRs for...well...forever basically. Ever wonder how they get really fast shutter speeds? The two shutters move with a very slight delay between them creating a slit that moves along the film/sensor. The shutter(s) are only able to expose the full sensor when the shutter speed is at or below the flash sync speed.

What engstrom said.

Plus, ever heard the phrase "rear curtain sync"? Normally, the flash will fire as soon as the first or "front" shutter curtain fully opens. With rear curtain sync, the flash fires just before the second or "rear" shutter curtain closes. The result is a different lighting effect.
