compact flash for d700 - 09-07-2008, 12:01 PM

So i'm getting a d700... yea!
Anyway, the specs say that it can read 35MPS. So, do i need to get a UDMA compact flash card? Anyone have suggestions? Nikon used to have a list of suggested CF cards for each camera... but not now.

Thanks,

Grant

And here I was about to recommend a SB-400.

Rob Galbraith has a performance database for several cameras and CF cards - the D700 is not on the list yet, but the D3 is.

I own a D3 (same sensor) and have yet to run into situations where a UDMA card would speed up my work. Now I don't shoot at 9 FPS very often, but even then, a short burst still doesn't fill up the buffer. At the moment, I'm using Ridata 150x Pro cards, but I also like SanDisk Extreme IV cards. I keep two 2GB cards in my rig but rarely spill over shooting RAW+jpg. YMMV.

Haha Grant! That didn't take long! And here you were just contemplating the D300 . I have both types of cards and they both work well.

If you're going to shoot hard the UDMA cards are worth the extra money. They are noticeably fast. Otherwise, the 8GB Sandisk Extreme III cards are fast and inexpensive.

But yeah, go visit Galbraith's web site and see stats for yourself.

The D700 is now on the list. I'm a little confused. The data is suppose to show "how long" (seconds I assume), but the columns give rate, (mb/sec), not seconds. Read below.

The data in the table below was derived by timing how long it took the Nikon D3 to write 23 JPEG Fine and then 15 RAW NEF photos to the memory card. Timing commenced when the camera's card status light illuminated, and stopped when the light went out. Each test cycle was performed 3 times (if the card's capacity allowed for that) to ensure accurate results..

8gb Ridata 233x Pro cards in my D700 with no issues. I occasionally do a burst at LaCrosse games, never had a problem.
