D300 or 24-70mm f/2.8? DECISION MADE! - 10-20-2008, 12:47 PM

OK, I should already know the answer to this, but I'm curious. I have an opportunity to get only one of these and I'm debaitng on which one I need most.
I'm shooting currently with a D300 and a D200 and love the image quality on high ISO sports shots I've been getting lately, but I have several weddings booked for next year and the f2.8 would be a big help as well

if you could get ONLY ONE, which one and why?

What lens would the 24-70 be replacing? It could impact the decision based on how much of an upgrade it is.

Sounds like you've already got two good bodies. I'd go for the glass - it's an excellent lens.

24-70. And when you can, pair it with the D700. The rest of your gear will pretty much gather dust at that point.

I say get the 24-70 first and when you can upgrade to the D700 :)

I currently use a Sigma 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 which is OK, but sucks in low light conditions (duh!)

the consensus so far is where I am leaning because I figure the D700 will drop a bit more by next year and then I'll be ready for it

Get the glass. No question in my mind!

Good Lens - 10-21-2008, 08:47 AM

Excellent lens... I have been shooting it for a year; coupled with a D300 & D3. This lens and the 70-200 2.8 are my main lens combos for travel photography (that is when I am shooting Nikon rather than Leica)

How about getting a used 28-70 f/2.8 and putting the savings towards a D700? There's absolutely nothing wrong with the 28-70, and I doubt you'd notice much of a difference between it and the 24-70.

I thought about that Wes, but couldn't find one that anyone wanted to part with....
the deal I found on eBay for the 24-70 was one I couldn't pass up and I got it from a dealer I have purchased from before

Wow! It's surprising that you could find a 24-70 but not the 28-70.

Fedex just dropped my 24-70 about 10 minutes ago.
They are available in stock almost everywhere online. Just not at b&m stores.
Like Nathan said, nobody wants to part with their 28-70, and I don't blame them, it is an excellent lens and most use them as their walk around lens.

Since I switched back to Nikon, I was looking for a 28-70 again, but I got a great deal from Dell and ended up paying less than I would've from B&H, even with overnight shipping.

My new 24-70 is on the Fedex truck as we speak. Dell has them on sale and in stock. My total with free next day is $1599.00.
