Problems with 5D mkII - 12-06-2008, 05:11 AM

apparently the Canon 5D mkII has some issues. If you look closely at shots with blown out spots (for example city scape's street lights), there are black dots (typically to the right of the blown out sections). I saw this on another forum. So if you have a 5D mkII, take a look at some night shots at 100% and see if you have the same issue (I have a RAW file that has displays the problem). Here are some links and examples:

meanwhile my D700 is performing beautifully

Were the original images underexposed when taken, then adjusted. The reason I ask, if you underexposed the image then post adjusted the exposure, you will always get noise with any digital camera in the shadows. What ISO were these taken at?

I don't think the noise is the issue.
There's a blacked out spot on the edge of each highlight.

I just got my 5D Mark II. I will definitely put it through its test and look for this. I also have seen the the posts about the black spots.

I agree that it's not a noise issue. Looks like the issue is too specific. It'll be interesting to see if this is a problem across the line, or is it endemic to just this particular camera? Hopefully it's not across the entire line. Canon took it on the chin with their Mark III focusing issues.

I didn't get either... maybe he was taking about himself. My questions was legit question to get more information about the noise.

Not sure new 5D Mk II owners would add "LOL" to any comments they have about potential problems. If there are bugs with the new model, Canon will fix it just as they did the 1D Mk III. And life will go on.

first run production problems maybe? I know a few people on Nikon forums are having issues w/ 'vertical banding' on the D700.

What it has to do with is Jacob's tendency to gloat about his "perfect" Nikon equipment and his decision to make the switch from Canon a while back. Read enough of his posts, and you'll see what I mean.

It is usually as result of overexposure rather than underexposure. It appears to be CA like at the edge of high contrast areas.

If you take a properly exposed shots you shouldn't have a problem unless your the OP and shoot Nikon.

I saw this same thing on another forum, it was flooded with everyone's expert opinion, but I must say I still bought the 5D Mark II kit today and I must say I am loving what I am getting so far with the video and the stills, if anyone is interested here is the link here:
