Question SD14 convert to EF mount? - 01-09-2009, 11:25 AM

I've discovered that the Sigma SD14 is selling for about $350 on Amazon. I was very intrigued by this camera when I was first looking to buy a DSLR and I'm still curious as to using the foveon sensor.

Does anyone know if the SD14 can be converted to take Canon lenses? And if it's practical? I'd be willing to give up AF fine, as this would be more an "art" camera, but I don't want to have to buy new lenses.

Thoughts, ideas?

As was pointed out to me, Canon EF lenses lack a proper aperture ring. While you might be able to attach the lens and focus manually, you can't stop down. Thanks a lot Canon!

The other consideration is lens flange to sensor distance. Since Canon's flange to sensor distance is shorter than most other manufacturers, other lenses work fine on Canon bodies and focus to infinity. If the SD14 body is thicker than Canon, the Canon lenses won't focus at infinity.

GOOGLE for various cross platform lens adapters.

This is a post I put on Sigma Forum....
Sigma Forum

I saw this on FM-Forum tonight.....

This guy has been able to mount a canon EOS and make the Auto-focus work...I guess I invested in the wrong lenses...LOL

Link to FM where he posted...!!

His photo site...with the conversion...Michael Przewrocki

You can try to contact him directly.....Hope this helps out....

I actually have a SD14 converted to Nikon F Mount....that is manual focus...but it is really an awsome setup...

Look around in the Sigma forum..there are several Canon non-AF mounts that will work just like the ones for all the other cameras...I would look on Ebay....that is where I found mine...

Nikon F-Mount on Ebay

I know this guy is working on a manual focus version for Canon...you might want to contact him directly....very nice and the parts are top-notch..

My SD14 can hold a Nikkor 300mm F2.8 Manual ED lens....and it feels right..with no shifting or issues with it falling off the camera.....unlike other conversions...here are some sample pics with ED 200mm F2 manual....

Again, I hope this helps....

Thanks Tony, I did come across that FM thread in my google search, it seems like the most promising solution. I will look into this further, but I'm afraid the conversion cost might make it come out of the affordable range.

I would actually email Luis thru the Sigma Forum....the conversion for manual use...was only $150.00 and you put the camera at 350.00 you can not beat it....very nice play camera...LOL....

Good luck...if you need anything please let me know...I can try to contact them too...

I will also keep you posted...my next project is to see if I can convert the SD14 to IR just like the other camera's....working on getting a non working SD14...will let you know how it goes...

Yeah, if he has a canon mount adapter similarly priced to the nikon adapter I think I'll go for it once funds allow.

SD14 is easy to convert to IR, actually designed that way. Take off the lens and pop out the pass through filter. I have a SD14 but have done the IR conversion. It is equally easy to convert back, just replace the filter.

I can't tell you about Canons but I own a Sigma DP2 and my "rules of thumb" are:

-Always shoot in RAW
-Use Sigma Photo Pro for processing
-Shoot in ISO 50-200 (Preferrably 50 as often as possible)
