Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4 prime, anyone had problems - 01-19-2009, 10:33 AM

Trying to decide on a new or used one. Has anyone ever had any issues with theirs that would make it worth getting a new one with warranty? Is the couple hundred $$ worth saving going used. I figured I could put the savings towards a 1.4 or 1.7 TC.

Also, anyone think they are going to update it with VR anytime soon?

Any and all comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

I replaced my old non-AF-S with a new AF-S a few years ago and I, for one, will tell you that this is the best camera lens for the money from any maker, bar none. My dentist (who is better heeled than I am) has one as well as the 300 AF-S f2.8 and he and I agree the image quality is virtually identicle from these two lenses. The f2.8 obviously focuses faster and is steadier on the tripod but the f4 with both the 1.4 and the 1.7 produce spectacular results. My wife uses mine with the 1.7 almost exclusively. Check out her results at the link below. As far as new vs used is concerned, I have had extremely good luck buying used lenses. If you can possibly try before you buy, I think you'd be okay. This lens is not known for quality issues but a warranty does make most of us sleep better.

Doug,

Thanks for the informative reply. Great shots by your wife! Are those mostly handheld or on a tripod? I don't have a tripod and only use a monopod at the wetlands shooting wildlife. I will be ordering a Bogen-Manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head in the next week or so.

I can't handhold a camera body without a lens on it, much less one with a 300mm attaced to it. I use a big metal Gitzo with a full Wimberley head. My wife has a Bogen with a Jobo Jr. Gimbal head. Would not leave home without them!!! Once you learn proper technique, you'll be amazed at the difference in sharpness.
