I'm trying to decide whether to stay happy (which I am) with my 5D or pull the trigger on the new 5DMKII. I'd like to hear opinions. I have pretty much all the glass I need (lots of L's) and shoot weddings and portraits. Trying to decide if the 5DMKII is worth spending the $, other than the fact that I would like to have it

OH - this is too easy! Give me the 5D and then you'll have to go and buy the 5D markII!

Get the 5DMkII and keep the 5D for a backup/second camera.

I have both, I think you should upgrade. The low light capabilities of the 5D Mark II is well worth it. Plus you have things like video (might want to record a speech), improved dynamic range, etc. ISO5000 is about the same as ISO1600 on the 5d

The LCD and ISO are worth upgrading! Think about it: Free camcorder with your purchase!

Are you suddenly out of camera, Joanne? If you still have camera to do what you do, just wait. IMHO, I think buying digital camera should skip couple of upgrade generations, like 20D to 40D/50D instead of 30D, or 1Ds MK 2 to MK IV/V instead of the III.

my thoughts are if you are still earning $$ shooting with the 5d then keep at it for a bit and let the hoooplah die down for the new rig. I think it is over priced at this point and in 6 months there will be better deals on the mk2. Ming has the right idea only I take it a little further and wait awhile before pulling the trigger on the newest offering from Canon. Now, if they had upgraded the focusing sytem I might be giving it more thought. Video isnt enough to make me forget my bank account and buy the new version. I would keep my old 5d and buy an 85 1.2. That is a better investment anyway.

5DMark2 is great. I have both and haven't shot a frame with my 5D since. I do use it as my backup for weddings. I have been using my 5D2 as a second body to my 1D3 for NHL games too.
For the record, I don't think it's overpriced at all. I bought 2 version 1 5D's at $3000 when they first came out and have gotten more than I ever dreamed out of them. Best body investments I have ever made. ROI has been GREAT. Regardless, if the specs are the same on the AF system. I can guarantee that the 5D2 AF servo is MUCH better than either of my 5D's.
As far as whether you should or not? Can't answer that. I certainly could have done without upgrading. But I figured after 3+ years, it was time to replace my wedding body (sold one of my 5D's about a year ago).

I ask because if that is the case, then it would really be an upgrade of the 5D's capabilities and I would really consider buying a 5D Mk II.

If you can afford it, go for it.
In fact, sell your 5D and buy two 5D Mk II bodies so that you don't have to compromise on the improved high ISO performance and new high-def LCD.

Honestly with things going the way they are in the economy I might think about keeping the 5d around for a couple more months. This also gives time for any bugs that come up with the 5d2 to be resolved. Some may say all the bugs have been worked out but as those Shutter Click counts rise there may be more....

Here's a thought:
Do you have a second body? If you don't, you really should consider getting anything at this point. If you do have one, this isn't an issue. 2 5d bodies would be great (I've seen used 5d's for $1200), as there are alot of benefits to shooting with two identical bodies.
Another thing to think about is that the 5d II is NOT identical to the 5d. In fact, based on what I've read, the ergonomics are quite different (not to mention the fact that they use different batteries). I personally wouldn't really mind, but I can see how this may be an issue.
I'm in a similar boat, actually. I'm sick of using a 20d as a second camera, and would LOVE to have two full frame bodies. However, I'm going to wait at least a few months before picking up a 5d II (for price drops and for kinks to be worked out if there are any).

Consider renting a MkII and see how you like it...if you dare. :) If I rented and tried, I know I'd want one. It is worse that grocery shopping when you're hungry. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
