Recover formatted memory card images? - 02-25-2009, 12:50 PM

Hi Everyone,
Last weekend I was preparing for a shoot and realized I formatted the wrong memory card with my Nikon D70s. As soon as I realized this, I removed the card and didn't write anything to it.
I tried several un-delete programs and didn't have any luck. Does anyone know of any other undelete / recovery programs that may assist in recovering some images? I really hate to lose those photos. the card is a Lexas Pro CF card with write acceleration. Any help / feedback is much appreciated! Thanks!

Joe,

I've had pretty good luck with data recovery (from diskettes, to camera memory cards, to 4TB SCSI arrays). If you're in Houston and want some help, shoot me a pm

Thanks Benjamin! I may PM you soon. I'm running my 5th recovery tool and it looks like this one may have better results than the other tools I used to scan this card. It is in progress of a very extensive scan and has so far found about 7 "lost files". I'm crossing my fingers. :)

not sure what you've tried, but I believe there is a thread or 2 somewhere here (search: data recovery) and some more programs to help.

Seconded. I've used this multiple times to recover images without fail. All of my cards are SanDisk, though, but I believe it will work with Lexar cards as well.

I have had great luck with a program I downloaded called Image Rescue. I think it cost $40.00 and I have only had to use it a couple of times, but it definitely paid for itself.

i just did that same @#%#$^%@#$ thing a few minutes ago

i did ~450 pictures today of a band and the car show at the drag strip up north of denton...i was kinda tired from all this and hopping up to windstar for an hour or so.

so, being tired, i didn't follow my normal steps of

1. create folder oh hard drive for images
2. COPY images to new folder on hdd (missed this step)
3. =VERIFY= my stuff copied (missed this VERY IMPORTANT step)
4. format or delete (if my card is still connected to computer) card

my heart sank to the center of the earth when i realized what i had done :(

ugh. the wait for the ZAR tool i downloaded is killing me.

doctahjones added 92 Minutes and 52 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

sooooooooooooooooo, my ass was so saved with this program:

http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm

it's free for recovering photos from memory cards. apparently it does some other recovery stuff for like hard drives or something, but that part you have to pay for.

so yeah. i'm happy. it recovered my .jpgs, and my .nefs, although the nefs were named as tifs. i'll glady deal with renaming all of them since they were recovered.

shew.

This is not a wise thing to do. It can mess up your card. ALWAYS FORMAT YOUR MEMORY CARD IN THE CAMERA!!! I don't reformat cards until I am ready to use them, just in case. I have had to go back to a card a couple of times to overcome a cyclical redundancy error.

oh, yeah sorry i wasn't clear....

if my camera is still connected (i don't have a card reader), then i just delete images...

but if i had already disconnected the camera, then i use the camera to format :)

Excellent advise. My policy too.
If my card still has a lot of room remaining on it I frequently just create a new folder for new pics and leave the old ones there until the card nears full and I need the space.

Your intentions are good and others researching this may benefit from your post, but the problem above was in Feb 2009.
