As for the 300 SSM, most say the Minolta and Sony are identical, same with the 70-200SSM. There is some speculation that a few of the Sonys got improved coatings over the original Minoltas but no one is certain.

My 100mm Macro D is Minolta since I got it $200 less than the Sony. My 11-18mm was Minolta not Sony since it was $200 less at the time. My 135mm STF IS Sony since the Minoltas are hard to come by, and I got it cheap.

The only lens that I know evolved for sure is the 50mm f/1.4. The Sony version is believed to be the revised Minolta 50mm f/1.4 that was in work but did not get released as a Minolta. It does has improved coatings and design over the available Min 50mm.

In most every other case, go for whichever is cheaper between the Minolta and Sony since they are the same.

If you are wondering if the Minoltas all work on the Sonys, the answer is yes, any AF Minolta works on the Sony bodies.

When I was shooting Minolta X-700's I loved their lenses, they were so good. I still regret that Minolta went away.

On the Minolta SRT 101 that is.

At that time ... Sony was still considered Cheap Jap Equipment.
They were Ok but Nikon was King then.

Great site!! Saw some my old lenses from way back when in there. Don't forget to hit the Dyxum link for all the other lenses(Sigma, Tokina, etc, etc)

Neophyte question here.

I have a bunch of OLD Minolta mount lenses that were from before auto anything.

i.e. 70-200 series one zoom
sigma 500 mirror
minolta 16, 24, 35, 50 primes.

Will they mount to any of the digital Sony's ?

If they are the old MC/MD lenses, no. You can buy an adapter but due to the lens to sensor distance they have a glass element and degrade the image. Most A-mounters that use older lenses tend to get an M42 to A-mount adapter instead.

Wow, for only $6,195 you can get a good quality Minolta 600mm lens.

LOL.....it is still cheaper than the Nikon and Cannon 600mm....

Tom....I am interested in your old minolta glass...what are the specs of the lenses....I have most but the 16, 35 are interesting.....

I have a bunch of old minolta glass...both MC/MD and the AF stuff....I actually like it...plus the price tag on a lot of it before this summer was good...

I want a 200mm F2.8....maybe in the future....maybe...

Kieth...your list is growing....!!!

Just get a Minolta to Canon adapter and use them on the Canon.

You'll love that 500mm mirror with all its donuts....
