Camera damaged in shipping! - 03-12-2009, 06:03 PM

Hi there,

I could use some advise on how to handle the following situation.

My Canon 5D is just 6 months old and Canon had a recall on them to fix the mirror. Well after 3 weeks I got my camera back and the box that it was delivered in was damaged. When I open the box and inspected the camera there is a severe impact scratch on the body.

Canon said I should phone FedEx, which I did and now they have sent me some claim forms.

I am not sure how this is all going to play out. i.e. do they repair or replace the camera?

What if the impact on the body has caused some internal damage that might only appear its ugly head sometime in the future?

Any suggestions on how to handle this? Do I have any rights or expectations on how this should be handled by FedEx or Canon?

Thanks in advance!

Tony

I would imagine calling Canon during business hours could clarify some things. They are one of the few businesses I know that have human support, in the country. They can transfer you to the right people. Hopefully they would cover shipping it to service (again) to inspect it for internal damage...

I would hate for this to happen to me. I've never been impressed with Canon's packing. My 1D was wrapped in butcher paper and the box came overfilled with peanuts... my 30D came in a box with not enough peanuts but plenty of crumped up foam sheet... oh well.

Be careful,,I had this problem with Gateway when I sent in for warranty work. They said it had water damage and I said no it didn't before it got there and it must have been damaged in transit. They sent the box and shipping label and only insured it for $100. They said it was DHL's problem but guess what, DHL said it was only insured for $100 to bad so sad. Lucky for me it turned out it did not have water damage but if it did I would have been out of luck. If I send anything in now for warranty work I pay the extra for insurance.
