D90 + SB800 + External flash battery pack??? - 03-18-2009, 11:37 AM

OK, guys... I'm having some issues trying to use my external battery pack with my SB800. The thin cord with the round end goes into my SB800, of course, but where does that other cable go with the 3 round bits? Is it supposed to plug into my camera? There's nowhere to put it... Can I not use an external battery pack on my flash if I'm using a D90? Do I need a DX00 for that capability???

Sorry for what's probably a dumb question for most of you, but even after some Googling, I have no idea what the answer is. But I know I can rely on the great minds at TexasPhotoForum!

Hi Preston. You talking about the Nikon battery pack? The cables both plug into the SB800. Look at the bottom front of your SB800. There's a removable, rectangle shape cap. You plug the other cable there.

Good call Paulo, I have never noticed that cap there nor there was a plug under it.

LOL Me neither! I can't wait to go home and take a look! That's so bizarre of me not to notice something like that... I work in IT and you typically have to be pretty observant to get by in that field, but I guess I still don't catch some things! lol

Thanks for the quick answer!! Embarrassingly enough, I was ready to give up! I guess it just seemed redundant to me to have 2 plugs going into the same device, so I thought maybe it went to my camera, but that didn't make much sense either...

I just got mine recently and felt the same way at first. The setup worked really well for me last weekend at a wedding (7hr). The recycle time is excellent. I tried the Duracell rechargeables (2650 mah) from Target and I was able to get over 900 images w/ flash. And it wasn't completely drained yet.

If anybody is interested in a battery pack for less than Nikon's price, I found one. This unit was recommended by several people at Nikon Cafe and DPR.
