The 5DMKII as a video camera... - 03-30-2009, 05:18 PM

I've seen plenty of people saying all the reasons the 5DMKII sucks as a video camera. Here are plenty of people showing it can be used as an awesome video camera. Put in the hands of video guys and gals and we see the remarkable ability of this camera....

I have not heard people say it sucks as a video camera, but that it sucked as a camcorder; and it's worth making the distinction. It is less about quality (well, except for the sound) and more about usability. There are a lot of people that expect this camera to work like a P and S with video function. Take it out, push the record button and go. You won't just be able to whip it out and start taking great shots. Rather, you will have to take some time to set-up your shots. You may even need stacked ND filters or nikon manual lenses. Then there is the sound capture issue....

For a professional or serious hobbyist taking the time to make a quality piece, it will work very well, because they will be taking the time to set-up their shots anyhow. For the mom with kids that wants something for t-ball, it's a no no.

Do you really think a t-ball mom is looking at the 5DMKII as a way to get video for her kids? I understand showing the short comings of the camera but consider your audience. I think most people here willing to put in a little extra effort to learn the nuances of video and the 5D.

Funny you should mention that... one of my closest friend's wife just ordered a 5D mk II after she played with mine last weekend. She is upgrading from her Fuji Finepix P&S. I spent the better part of an hour giving her a crash course on the advantages of SLR over P&S. She loves the HD feature. I suggested that she might want to start with a Rebel t1i when its available for 1/4 the price instead of a 5D, but she insisted . Guess what?

She's literally a soccor mom
