The Friendly War Of Color - 5DMkII's at the edge - 04-12-2009, 10:52 AM

The current Digital Journalist has a report on the Holi Festival in
Mathura, India. Danish Photojournalists, Klavs Bo Christensen and Carsten Snejbjerg cover it. The Holi Festival is a public riot of colored powders and water thrown about with great abandon. To protect their 5DMkII's in this envirnoment they took the following steps:

"In the end we wound up using gaffer tape to protect our Canon 5D mk2's. In the morning a fully charged battery and a 16 GB flash card were loaded into the cameras. After the cameras were turned on, they were completely covered in gaffer tape. We both used a fixed 35mm/1.4 lens that was now not possible to change during the day. Even though the camera was completely covered in tape, we could still use the most important buttons and operate the camera."

But one of the cameras severely malfunctioned upon returning to Denmark.

Full story here.

I still keep thinking the 5DMkII's (at least some) don't deal well with moisture.

One more time:

35mm lens on a 35mm camera. Does it get any better? I thoroughly enjoy the three 35mm lenses that I have.

Still waiting for Canon to get the 5D right.

I think they've got the 1DsMkIII right and now just waiting on cash flow.

Take a look at their work, not a ringing endorsement either. One was the PJ who was kicked out of a Danish PJ awards show for excessive Photoshopping.

I was in India for Holi last year.

I didn't let the camera out of the bag. I could have had some great pictures, but it wasn't worth risking my camera and lens. Maybe next time I go there or Holi, I will sacrifice my 10D to the gods of Holi and try to get some great pics. But I enjoyed just celebrating it with the orphans of Orissa, India.

"Yawn", that's common sense.

Isn't that obvious? It's a "prosumer" grade camera with basic sealing.....

What's next?, underwater test? LOL

Thank you thank you thank you!!! If anything can be learned from all of john's reposted failure reports is that quite a few stupid people bought this camera when a 1D was the better choice.

When I went to New Orleans it rained most of the time there. Yes when my camera was being drenched for the first, second, third time I was a little worried, after that my worrying stopped. It took pictures despite being drenched in hard rain/down pours. Even when I was walking, it would still get very wet. But it worked without any problems. I need to remember to use a umbrella next time. I used both my 24-105 and 35L

Is the 5DII not weather sealed? I used my 40D/GRIP+70-200IS for about an hour in galveston in pretty mild rain and i had no problems...

It's got some sealing. I have used mine in moisture and light rain without problem. Thanks to the internet, the 5dII will most likely become one of the greatest, most maligned cameras of all time. Sad that just a few people could cause such a grand stink over a camera not doing what it's not built to.

Taking a 5D into the extreme condition is like taking a lexus over rough mountaineous terrain - isn't that what a 4x4 truck is for.

If weather sealing is important, Canon does offer the 1-series - which can stand a lot more than any 5D could. So I am not sure why people complain about 5D's not working in extreme conditions. It was never designed or sold as a rugged camera that can take to extremes well. It is marketed as a full frame camera that brings the ability of full frame for a reasonable price.

On a side note - after having broken a 1Ds and 16-35L from just a 1.5 ft fall, I am not sure everything that is said about being "built like a tank" holds true either :)

I own both and use them as such. Love my 5D2 and have used it quite regularly since beginning of Dec. No complaints.

Love the 35L on it too... :)
