1DMkIII or a 5DMkII - 05-08-2009, 09:52 AM

I've been considering getting a new 5DMkII, but I have no need for a second body. I currently have a 1DMkIII. I'm a techie geek type of guy, and I THINK I'd love to go full frame and the increase in MP and ISO would be nice.

I don't shoot sports so I don't need the FPS of the 1D, but would I be taking a huge step back and be disappointed?

I'm not a pro, and my bank account isn't going to let me get a 1dSmk3...

Stop trying to get me to stimulate the economy. I'm already building a new house, so I am doing my part!

If you don't shoot sports, it's easy: 5dii.

I have both cameras. And I hardly ever use the 1diii anymore. I only use it for the extra reach and as back-up.

As much as I *love* the feel of shooting with the 1diii, when I compare it with the 5dii, I'm personally not moved by the colors straight out of the camera and I can't stand the screen.

.
But extra reach really isn't an issue is it?
With all of the extra pixels in the 5DII, if you cropped that FF image down to the same 1.3 crop factor dimensions as the 1DIII image would produce, wouldn't you still have as much image data left? Just as if you used the 1DIII for the "extra reach"?
This OP's issue has been intriguing me as well.

Dude, come on! You've got it all WRONG! Bank accounts come and go, but your memories are forever (as long as you have the proper equiment to photograph them)! Why would you shortchange your memories with anything less than the very best ALL your money can buy?

Clearly, you need to get both a 5D MK II, and a 1DS MK III. Dont forget a 14mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, and a big-ass bag or two, so you can tote is all around!

I'm sure my lender would be none to happy when I told them I didn't have the funds required to close my mortgage becuase I spent my savings at B&H.

What do you shoot?

Are you at all interested in HD video capture?
How important is having a high-def LCD for checking images in camera?
Do you find yourself wanting to go wider with your current lineup of lenses?
Does your 1D III get heavy or cumbersome?
Are you ready to invest in more CF cards because of the larger file sizes with the 5D II?
Do you care if you have a spare battery right away (5D II's batts are scarce)?

If you said yes to more than three of these, the 5D II is worth a look. Have you played with one yet? It's an awesome body, and it appears by others' experience to do a lot of things well, but so does the 1D III. If full frame is what you're after and you don't mind used, there's the original 5D, the 1Ds II in the same range used as a new 5DII, etc., etc. Or get a 35 mm film camera for your lenses and have at it! Images "straight out of camera" can be more pleasing that way.

Matt - Just my thoughts. You could get the 5DMKII and another lens like 24-70mm 2.8. If you are buying a new house you might have room for a studio and could also buy some studio lights and back drop. The 1DmkIII is a nice camera but it is designed for sports.
