Portfolio Books - 05-13-2009, 07:27 AM

No, I am not a pro, but I do still like to have a bunch of my work printed to show people because I still think prints are better than a computer screen. I have an 11x14 portfolio book with some great super clear pages that I am very happy with, but sometimes I just like to caryy 4x6 books. Problem is the pages on my Itoya Storage/Display books kind of suck. I have two generic ones that actually have clearer pages, but are pretty cheesy looking.

Anyone have and recommendations for a good 4x6 portfolio book?

(I know, good 4x6 portfolio book is almost an oxymoron.)

I have a 9x12 portfolio book I use for my main "carry around" book, but I also have several of the Superior Albums (4x6 & 5x7) that have the pressure sensitive pages. i like them because the prints are fully exposed.

I like the idea of exposed prints, but my friends are apparently challenged when it come to handling photos. They cannot grasp how to handle them. It would probably still be okay for most of my 4x6 prints but I have several metallics that show every fingerprint.

I hadn't thought of going 9x12. I started with the 11x14s thanks to many Adorama sales, but most of my personal prints are 16x20, which would be a huge pain to carry, but neat to show off.

I have an 11x14 hardcover book (an actual book, not inserts or anything) of ~14 images I keep in my car and update 2 or 3 times a year - it's quite expensive to print (~$70-90 depending on the options you get) but makes a nice impression.

I looked at that as an option too. Where did you get yours made?

Through the end of May, Full Color is offering any size 20 page soft-cover books for $15. You might try that as demo books.

I had a hard cover book made up for my father-in-law from MyPublisher.com. It was about $30 for 26 pages of 8x10, but you could do cheaper. I wanted something nice (it was a bunch of shots we took last year of his wood turning efforts). He was blown away by it, and I was very pleased (though of course I could see the little problems with some of my photos and editing).

You can get paperback books made at a variety of places for a lot cheaper. I think these may be a good way to go verses printing them yourself and putting them into portfolio books. At least it's another option to consider.

Call me crazy but an iPod touch has been a blessing for portfolio-show-off (on the fly, when I run into someone who shows a bit of interest.

You're crazy. I do have some on my HTC Touch Pro, but I like having them printed, plus it allows me to show people paper options.
