I've been there one time- and found they have half-tame wild turkeys roaming around- you can't exactly pet them, but they don't fly when they see you, either.

---------------------------
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

I went through there one time on my bike. It was well worth the time to see.
Just be sure you start out with a full gas tank if it is on a Sunday Morning...!!!

Great place to visit in the Spring or Fall. In the Summer, it is like you are on the face of the sun - literally! No cell service in the bottom of the canyon but definitely worth a visit. Fireworks every Friday night in the summer after the outdoor musical. Lots of deer roaming around as well that will just about pose for you.

I would love to go up there and spend a night and get up before sun rise and shoot the early morning light. I hope to get away for a weekend in march or early may.

I was raised in the Canyon. My parents had about 8 sections of land in the PD . They sold it while I was in viet nam. I still have family in Claude and Amarillo. I try and go back as often as I can.

Bill let me know when you go, I would love to tag along. I have been there twice, last time being last May. The place was beset by thousands of wildflowers.

Caprock Canyon State Park - 07-26-2007, 11:01 PM

Another awesome place, a couple hours closer to D/FW, is Caprock Canyon State Park. I haven't been to Palo Duro, but I believe the landscape is very similar. Let me tell you, I was VERY impressed at Caprock Canyon. The facilities were very nice (we do primitive camping, had our privacy from other campers, decent chemical toilets nearby), and it was not crowded at all. We went in May, Mother's Day weekend, and there were so many wildflowers! I'm told there are plenty of difficult hiking trails, but we stuck to the family friendly Eagle Point trail with our three young sons. My photos are here:

Don't be too judgemental, these were taken with my old Fuji e550, before I had an SLR (I now have an Olympus E-410 and can't wait to go back and take even more and better photos!)

Are you the same Bill the Troll Whisperer from dpreview? I doubt you'll find this reply 6 months later... but I have to say, those are some amazing photos you got, even in bright sunlight. You were certainly blessed with some beautiful clouds. We had a little of each. Some clouds, some endless blue skies.

You're not a real Texan until you go... - 08-12-2007, 01:52 PM

... and I've lived in Texas a long time. This spring was my first trip to Palo Duro and Caprocks. True Lone Star treasures!

Pal Duro Canyon - 09-10-2008, 04:41 PM

I had the opportunity to spend a day in June photographing the canyon. It had rained the night before so everything was bright and clean. Great place to spend the day.

Here's how dumb I am: I lived in Lubbock for a year and never made it a little ways north to the canyon. Now it will be a drive to get there from Fort Worth, but oh so worth it!
