The Lake Waco Wetlands were constructed in August of 2001 by the City of Waco to mitigate the loss of natural habitats from the raising of Lake Waco by approximately seven feet.
Eleven million gallons of water are pumped into the wetlands every day from Bosque River. The wetlands are home to wide variety of wildlife, including a fair number of water birds such as herons, egrets, cormorants and grebes. Several species of ducks can be found here, as well, including the Northern Shoveler.
