Ice at the Gaylord - 12-08-2009, 10:52 PM

I've been meaning to go to ICE the last couple of years but never got there until today.
Went with another TPF'er.
The Gaylord is indeed interesting, but the ICE was underwhelming. Fellow TPF'er said that it was much better in past years.
Nonetheless, I took a few pictures in the 7 degree environment. The 7D with 24-105 performed flawlessly.
The last image is what both camera and I saw after we came out of the icebox and into the heat.

I've still never been. Looks pretty nice to me Tom. Did you use the 7D on all these? I get EXIF on all but #2 and #7.

Yes. 7D with 24-105 mostly at 24 ISO1600 and 3200, tried 6400 but looked too noisy in the preview.. gloves are absolutely necessary.

Looks like ya'll had fun. Janice, you gotta watch Tom. He always seems to post the most unflattering images of his friends. That's why I have a Tom folder - just in case.

You'll like it wil , except they make you put on a parka that you have no idea who wore it last.....
The whole place is very clean ( I guess it's because colored ice doesn't show the dirt?) but very cold......

We went right at opening and I think we were the first ones in. No crowds, or other people for that matter.

A fellow in the broadest sense is someone who is an equal or a comrade. The term fellow is also used to describe a person, particularly by those in the upper social classes. It is most often used in an academic context: a fellow is often part of an elite group of learned people who work together as peers (regardless of gender) in the pursuit of knowledge or practice.

I'll be heading out there tomorrow. Any recommendations as to camera settings? Don't want to be fumbling around too much with the gloves on...

I had thought about taking the granddaughter to see it, but I'm not sure toddler's will really dig the temperature in there. Anyone have experience in years past taking small tots out there?

I went the weekend after Thanksgiving (I'll post a few later).

To be honest, I didn't use gloves at all and didn't have any problems with the cold. My biggest mistake was in wearing a coat underneath the parka that the give you. I was sweating in no time. The parka alone would have been enough.

I don't remember my exact settings, but the my D3 with the 28-70 f/2.8 did an awesome job. I don't think I needed to go above ISO2500 or so. Images were very noise-free.

Wish I could have done the slide. The day that we went, they were not allowing anyone other than small kids on the slide.
