Round Top & Back - 12-15-2009, 11:25 PM

Wayne, Jeff & I took a trip out to Round Top and back in the fog on Sunday. We took a round-about route and stopped whenever the mood struck us. I thought I'd post a few pictures from the trip. We expected it to clear up and not be foggy most of the day, so I feel certain that Wayne & Jeff would agree that we need another visit to most of these places.

Well done. We overlapped on two of the subjects above. When I get my Round Tuit working, I'll add my takes. See how they compare.

It was a good trip. A proper "Walkabout" as they say. Rambling around on the back roads. Stopping in the middle of nowhere. Great fun. Great pizza!

Nice job Wes. The first one is good (better than what I took), I like the way the monument and the tree behind it make a pairing, and your tonal approach to B/W suits both the subject and the weather conditions.

I like the arrangement of the fences in Chappell Hill Masonic Cemetery 2, though I wonder if rotating the shot to be more level would improve it (not saying for sure that it would, just wondering).

For the statue at Wesley, the white sky in the upper right corner detracts. Not much you can do about it given the weather conditions; maybe change the angle so the background tree fills that space, but then the angle on the statue probably wouldn't be as good.

In the St Martin Church shot you're starting to lose the light. I can't remember, did you shoot this with film first? If you have a film shot from a couple minutes earlier I think it will be better.

I'm not really happy with what I got at the cemetery, but I think a got a couple of keepers from later in the day that I'll try to post soon. When you get your film developed, be sure to post some more.

Thanks, Jeff, for the comments...

The Cemetery #2 fence shot was a problem... the monument was not completely vertical, the foreground fence and the background fence both slanted, but not the same amount... so when I squared it, I opted for the monument because it was the largest form - - perhaps I will go back and redo it with the foreground fence parallel to the bottom and see how that looks - -

I cropped the angel @ Wesley picture to eliminate as much of the bald sky as I could... I figured I would have to live with the little bit... darken the corner, maybe - - line a lens vignette? I also thought about dodging the face a little to brighten it up, but that was a 1980s thing we did in newspaper shots of people and in the end, you knew it wasn't realistic - - why would the light be shining upward in that direction - - even a reflector would have lightened most of the front - - so I left it in shadow.

No, I did not shoot the St Martin church on film - - the light was fading fast and I only did the digital pictures - - besides, I only had B&W loaded and I would have gotten nothing if I had stopped to load color. I do have a few others to consider, but while the church was lit better, I did not like the framing and shooting position... In the few minutes we were there, I worked my way around from the left side to the right side and this one near the front left corner had the best perspective on it, IMO.

Ken, we tried to make the best of what we had. We actually had about 2 hrs of sunlight in the late afternoon, and I have some shots from the historic village in Round Top where I tried to take advantage of it, but I'm not sure i really like them - - I may just post them as ideas that I want to explore again, but I want to work on the ones that looked the best first. Thanks for looking.

You were invited, but apparently prefer golf to photography.

Next time we'll make it a Saturday so you have no excuses.

I can go Sundays every now and then. I don't play Golf every Sunday.

This is also football season.

And I have to do my laundry.

And cook dinner.

Pam might be free though.

Nice work Wes, I like them all.
Don't feel bad Kevin, I wasn't invited, and I don't play golf or watch football.

Here are a few of mine from the masonic cemetery. Overall I was a bit disappointed with what I got there; the shot I was sure would be my best of the day ended up being a dud.

Jeff, I like your #2. I have several of that canted urn monument, but none that turned out that good (...I have to let go of the documentary style where everything looks like it is presented in 3-view orthographic...). But I tried capture several other places where the stones were leaning and the fences were broken and I haven't worked on them yet. This one prompts me to go back and look at them (...among the 122 images I took there!)

Now we need to see Wayne's digital images!

Here's another addition to the group... from the historic village in Round Top...

I like the tricycle shot quite a bit. It's just full of shapes, with the rectangles created by the boards, the triangles created by the wheel spokes and lower shadow, and then of course the wheels. I also like that it's monochromatic but still in color.

Thanks, Jeff... I had originally planned for it to be a B&W picture - - to go with the old style of the village, but when I saw it, it was all shades of brown & tan so I decided to leave it as it was and just crop a bit.

Here's another... a little different from most of my stuff...

And I put up a folder in my Lug Gallery for more of the pictures from the trip, here.
