First concept/strobist picture. - 06-04-2011, 02:16 AM

For those who don't know... I suck at using flash. So I've been reading Strobist blog, Neil Tangents blog, and basically any info I can find on and how to use this 580EX II I have.

Ok, that said, I was putting away dishes when I spotted how some white bowls (similar to the ones in this picture) were sticked. I'd thought that make an interesting photo, but I wanted to shoot it if I was shooting a product for a company.

Anyhoo, I mounted the Flash on a stand and shoot through with my Wescott umbrella camera right with about -1 1/2 FEC. All triggered with some Paul C. Buff Cybercync triggers.

I'm pleased with the results, but I know I can do better. Hopefully some of you point out the flaws so that I can apply the lessons learned in my next lighting venture.

Cheers!

Overall, a nice shot! I would maybe try to get a little more light in to the bottom. Maybe with a reflector, to make the reflection on the table stand out just a tad more.
Strobist style shooting is fun - keep practicing!

Cheers Tom.

I was considering using a reflector, but I was unsure of where to place it in regards to the setup. Maybe I could have placed it to the left angled down?

A very nice shot, I would try to get more light on the bottom of the bowl. If you have a second light you might also play with trying to get some very subtle rim lighting on the left side. Also, the edge of the table blends in quite a bit with the background, you might play around and see if you can't make the table edge more distinct from the wall

I was thinking lower left, angled up! Place the reflector low on the left side, to bounce a little of the umbrella light up into the shadow portion. Play around with it!

I'd say use a narrow, rectangular reflector from direct left so you get a thin rim light effect. Just enough to cancel out the reflections and replace them with specular highlighting.

...Was that the primary buffer panel?

Not yet. I've been thinking about doing them. Actually, no reason why I can't try and see how it goes. So I guess I'll start.
