Need Feedback: Forced to Stop - 08-22-2011, 08:12 PM

Critique: NC:

Have you ever been forced to stop taking photo's at a pee-wee football game?

I'm not bill Belichick - and I don't work for LSU, I was taking pictures of my daughter's drill team.

Even better the reason I was given was the "Coaches" did not want thier players scooped. wait this is PEE WEE Football !
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Isn't tht like FREEDOM of the PRESS...

would love to have feedback on this...

To be honest, unless you're taking inappropriate pictures, or on private land, you can shoot the heck of them all you want.

Taking pictures of children is a very touchy subject with many non-photographers. Be careful.

I would think that if you are in the stands and there were not any restrictions on the type of camera/lens you brought in then shoot away. I am having a hard time believing that a coach would have any problem with stills taken from the stands but he might have a problem with a video camera. Even saying that if there were restrictions then they should have been posted somewhere so that a confrontation could be avoided.

Now if you were on the sidelines then whatever reason was given for you not to be there you will have to respect. It does not have to make sense but there are rules that have to be followed for sideline access. Liability insurance is one that comes to mind.

The only objections I would really have is if you DIDN'T have a kid there, weren't a family member, or didn't know any of the parents there.

Then it would just be plain creepy.

I was at Discovery green a few months back and got tired of taking building shots and wanted to see what kind of shots I can take of the kids with a high shutter speed. After a few shots, I realized I could be construed as a pedophile and continued on to shooting buildings again.

Sometimes you just gotta ask yourself, "Does this make me look like a creep" and go from there.

1) Who stopped you?
2) Unless you are a news photographer, freedom of the press has nothing to do with this.

However, depending on who "stopped" you, you might have discussed it with the coach, maybe before the game.

The circumstances are a bit sketchy, so it is not possible to really say what you might have done.

Yes I have at little league. LL International has very strict guidelines on shooting images from the field. I had been shooting my son for about 7 years on the field and no one ever said a word, I would ask the ump and coaches every game for permission. The league president changed and he is an attorney (stickler for rules) and didn't like me shooting images from the field and he stopped me. I had no choice but to leave the field and did so politely.

However it is not against the rules to shoot from outside the fence so I just made the best of it.

Each league has its own set of rules, check with them to see if you violated any. If you didn't then shoot away. But be ready for coaches/parents at these events to question you if they don't know you. That is where introducing yourself to "officials" will help. As far as scooping players...that is just plain ridiculous!! LOL but I am sure it has happened or they wouldn't be pissy about it.
